From today’s batch I’ve read Between the World and me plus maybe 100 pages of The Savage Detectives and a couple chapters of H is for Hawk
Does he have any short stories?
Maybe. He’s most famous for detective Dave R books. About 20 of them
He’s like if Faulkner wrote mystery novels.
Stealing a concept from gord downie
Remember when he learned the word blue-black
Everything was blue-black for awhile
Visit from the goon squad is great
So is between the world and me
Evicted great too
Behind the beautiful forevers is sitting in my to read pile next to bed
I think The Secret History was so much better than the Goldfinch.
It’s on my long to read list
I just loved the way goldfinch unfolded
Goon squad was solid too
A tier below other Pulitzer winners this century for me
Overstory goldfinch sympathizer the North Korea book middlesex cavalier and clay whiteheads books
Some solid choices in the 25 years so far
Forever war
I guess we have different tastes. I thought Kav and Clay was meh. I more enjoyed The Yiddish Policemen’s Union.
In the top 20 list, I’ve read most of Kavalier and Klay and most of The Corrections. Maybe someday I’ll finish them, although it’s been such a long time that I would need to start from the beginning again.
ETA: I’ve also seen “American Fiction.” That should count for something!
I’m a sucker for those types of books. Coming of age. Friendships. Trials. Some magical moments.
That book is also on my too read t list. Like 400 other books as well
After top 20, ended up with 10 of those. Read 25 of top 100
Of the top 20 I’ve read
Never let me go is unreal good. Ishiguro became a favorite of mine with this and a few others
Kavalier and clay- as talked about up thread. Just loved it
My brilliant friend. - I’m on book four right now and read the first 3 in this year. All are exceptional.
Brief wondrous life of Oscar. Was recommended this. Didn’t even know it was a Pulitzer winner. Loved this book.
The road. Really good book
Wolf hall. Really good book. Cool take on an old story
Underground Railroad. I liked it. Not as much as the ones above.
The known world. - surprising to see it this high. Pulitzer winner in early 2000s. It was ok. Interesting story with the black family of slave owners back in the day
Gilead Thought it was really boring. Wasn’t for me
Lincoln in the bardo. Only one of these I actively hated. I might just be too dumb for this book but I don’t get it. Happy when it was done
Finally finished Shogun. Not the end I expected but I didnt had high hopes entering the last chapter. There were parts of the book where I just couldnt lay it down. One thing really bothered me: they often said “so sorry” I almost wanted to scream stop this shit.
It kinda felt that the book ran out of steam after Mariko died and the ship got burned down. The further I went into last chapter the more obvious it became that there wont be the grand finale I would have expected.
Just to be sure: Non of his other books are a sequel to that story? I think I read Taipan few years ago when it was a cheap offer.
They say “so sorry” so much because in Japan, even today, people say “so sorry” incessantly. It’s an accurate portrayal of communication within the culture.
And the last book Clavell wrote, “Gaijin,” is somewhat of a sequel, in that it’s set in Japan at the end of the Edo Period, and there is reference to characters who appeared in Shogun. If you love Clavell and loved Shogun no reason not to read it, but it’s probably the worst of all his novels, in that he wrote it while he was dying of cancer and it apparently didn’t get fleshed out in typical Clavell fashion like his previous works.
I am relatively dumb and love the novel, but the writing is very far afield of Saunders’s short fiction which is my very top recommendation for the Unstuck crowd. Try the CivilWarLand in Bad Decline collection, my can’t miss lock of the year.
I didn’t like it either.
Just finished Story of the Lost Child
I got a Lenù shaped hole now.
Just finished the Three-Body Problem trilogy. Can’t believe I initially almost gave up up on it. So glad I gave it another chance. Mind-blowing.
How can someone even imagine such a story, much less write it. And in Chinese!
I agree completely. Just really good books all three
