Since we’re mostly too cynical or apathetic to get into the spirit of resistance, this will primarily be a thread for watching and reporting what other people do. It’s gonna be a long four years. I have to believe even small acts are better than playing possum and waiting 2 years for an election.
50/50/1 is a decentralized national protest/movement fighting for our democracy, our constitutional rights, and to oppose the alt-right fascism that has been growing in this country. It is completely grassroots, organized by volunteers and participants around the country.
I think this was started by Ed Niedermeyer (author of Ludicrous: The Unvarnished Story of Tesla Motors). It’s an effort to organize protests at Tesla stores nationwide with the goal of driving Tesla’s stock price down. The idea is that since Tesla is Elon’s piggy-bank, this is the best way to hurt Musk financially. There have been protests nationwide and at least one at an international location. Numbers of people are relatively small but visible. There were 1000 people at a protest in Tucson and there have been two protests here in Salt Lake. It might be a weekly thing on Saturdays now.
March 4th Against Tyranny (50501) managed a moderate-sized rally at the Utah State Capitol today. Not bad for mid-day on a Tuesday. Props for having a good sound system. Seriously, if I ever organize a protest, that’s going to be near the top of my priorities. Also arranged the crowd for better visibility compared to other groups that just kind of show up and wing it.
Stand Up for Science rally today. Most speakers were from the University of Utah, which is just a few miles away. You could tell because they each announced they were not there representing the university.
Yeah, it can be. I’ve also noticed that people who do show up don’t seem that fired up. People get tired or disillusioned or just look to survive. Maybe that will change as awareness and anger grows, I don’t know. It’s convenient for me to go, so I go. Good for you for going. It’s not nothing.
I’d say a couple of hundred people were here yesterday to protest the current Utah legislature’s shenanigans and appeal to the governor to veto the worst of these. There were three camera crews there so maybe they got good coverage.
Cox (gov) was never “cool.” Initially branded himself as a moderate with the slogan “Disagree Better.” But he’s turned out to be a Trump ass kisser and I doubt he vetoes anything.
A lot of these people have seen better days but they have a lot more fight in them than Chuck Schumer. Got some good FUCK TRUMP and DEPORT ELON chants going.
