We Are The Music Makers (Musician's Thread)

The fact you linked the piece so fast is awesome. I’m probably a classical noob other than school but still that’s impressive.

Roger McGuinn had a 12-string guitar. It was like nothing I’d ever heard basic as fuck in 2020.

Who do you listen to? I’ve written about it before, but from a composition standpoint I think the vast majority of what passes as (instrumental) mainstream electronic is pretty rough, and I’ll extend that hot take by theorizing it’s because the genre is flooded with people coming from a strictly DJ background. A lot of it sounds like a noise collage to me.

I actually barely listen to electronic music. I went to raves a lot when younger and know djs but I never really listen to electronic music. I’m a deadhead and toured with Phish when younger for a few years off and on. I love all music but modular got me back into electronic type stuff and trying to make music instead of just drumming to it.

This guy conducted a hip hop orchestra and does modular jams and I really like his shit. I just try to have fun really as a hobby.

Hear and be stupefied by this 16 second totally non derivative tour de force of angst and brooding I just created in as many seconds.

@MysteryConman Did you get your Polyend Tracker and start messing around with it?

Not yet. I’ve been really delinquent on pursuing artistic or creative outlets during covid. I’m getting sucked into board games and then more board games online, plus reading, and other random stuff. I just reconnected with an old friend I hadn’t talked to in a few years who makes his own beats, so hopefully that’ll be some inspiration for me.

What about you? Have you been playing with it?

I don’t have one but saw a video recently of someone using it and thought about you.

Good thing you @'d me, I don’t normally check this thread, and didn’t realize you’d posted more Colin Benders. This dude is so talented.

I was going to link a stream I watched on Twitch from Oct 20 that was even better than his normal stuff imo but Twitch deletes the videos. Damn it.

Is there video of that stream that maybe he posted to his YT? It can’t just be permanently gone, right?

He has a playlist of livestreams on his YouTube but it doesn’t look like his later streams from late summer/fall are on there. I know the date from sending it to several friends lol.

sorry i just wanted to use the word “parcheesi”

I’m not sure how to ask this but are there any books/tabs I can get with intermediate+ (lead) guitar exercises with an emphasis on theory (rather than just say picking pattern exercises). I know my blues and modes positions around the neck, but I don’t do much more than ascend/descend randomly.

Like for example a friend of mine (25 years ago jesus) taught me a standard descending sweep of the E minor arpeggio from the 5th string 7th fret, followed by an ascending sweep of the F# dim from 1st string 8th fret to 6th string 14th. Stuff like that, but increasing in complexity, in a book or some tabs?

Added proof of suck (take #50 something)

I know I can create my own exercises but I’m into spoons and feeding. Doesn’t have to be sweeps, really anything that’s going to increase theoretical literacy with a direction towards improvisation.

I’ve sub’d to a few sites over the years. I’m grateful that they’re out there, but sometimes I yearn for just like a physical tome of things to practice. Going through video after video feels inefficient after a while. If you were taking a 1st or 2nd year course in classical guitar (they have those right?), wouldn’t they give some kind of workbook or am I just imagining something that doesn’t exist?

There are some used ones of your second link on amazon for cheapo, that could work. I’m about $20-30 dollars interested, but not much more than that.
