War crimes in Ukraine: Just asking questions about both sides

This guy sounds like a moron.

Imagine you commit your professional life to a thesis that you thought was right and, even better, seemed completely unfalsifiable. As that theory with decades of work falls apart, are you just going to say ‘my bad guys, I was wrong for a few decades’?

Nah bro fuck that you gotta double down.

Kinda like what happened today, only that was over internet bullshit.

Yep. Theoretical physicists, for example, do it all the time.

If your chosen career path is primarily to make bold predictions in a speculative or inexact field, it’s what you signed up for.

You are right and it is not surprising that JM has doubled down (much easier than the alternative). The problem is that other people still cling to him and his views (cough cough).

The charitable view here is that the same bias is in play here too.

I can’t really speak with some sort of moral authority here, as an entire meme on 2+2 was built from my recalcitrant take on the 2009 economy as things went to shit, but hey I can recognize that biased thought pattern.

The other people do not have decades of their intellectual capital invested in JM’s thesis as JM does. So I cut them no slack. Of course, they may be invested as well, but not to the extent that JM is. It should always be easier for “followers” to shed a false belief compared to the originator of said belief.

Not nearly as easily as it could have during the Cuban Missile crisis.

Fascinating. I change thread titles all the time and never knew if anyone noticed. Good to know.

Some communism experts who have never lived under it too, now.

You not so sure about those war crimes, either?

This. “Bet you a million that man will walk on Mars before I die”.

Guess that gag doesn’t work too well on a gambling forum where people know about escrows and shit. On the flip side, non-gamblers don’t get it at all.

oh and btw this reminds me. SK’s post of ‘it’s better in context, just watch the 70 minute video’ is some of the laziest trolling I’ve ever seen. Don’t get me wrong it still worked, but it’s still pure trolling. It’s an old game, and something he’s pulled on me in his origins of covid nonsense.

You’ll notice he never actually says what the context is in that post, and he almost certainly didn’t watch the 70min video in the 33 minutes between suzzers and his post. He never watched that video in its entirety, and almost certainly didn’t watch it period.

He simply didn’t have a real response, so what he does is put the onus back on you to prove what you said. By asserting that there’s some magical context, it’s up to you waste 70 minutes of your life listening to that garbage. It’s like a medical insurance company denying every claim, there’s a good chance you won’t appeal, and he can ‘win’ there. You’ll see him follow that up with ‘What do you mean X?’ (This is also something he does to avoid a real response, and again to put the onus on you to drive discussion when he doesn’t have that real response)

But yeah victor, I’m not watching JM’s 70 minute video that was posted as an obvious troll. No one should honestly. You didn’t either.

On the other hand he gets to sit at home and laugh that people wasted their time watching his YouTubez, so it still kind of worked.

His goal isn’t to win the argument it’s to derail threads, piss people off, and waste people’s time.

I watched the whole video on Saturday or Sunday.

Was lapka an expert?

you can easily search for measheimer on other forums and see the video come up in much the same way that sk brings it up. like posting multiple times, with the same vacuous argument, inviting it to watch at time codes. the algorithm loves that shit too on an 8 year old lecture rehosted at multiple academic channels.

The russian trollfarm Metodichka is somewhat easy to recognize, although sometimes it seeps through not directly but via willingly useful idiots, who pick it up elsewhere.

No idea, but pretty sure she wasn’t a big fan. Certainly more of an expert than some yank in a cushy IT job that pays about three times as much as his actual skills warrant, and with a quality of living he couldn’t dream of in the promised lands he so wistfully longs for, and who is perpetually whining about the country that provides him that opportunity.

I’m certainly not an expert on Russia or Ukraine and never presented myself as such. Don’t know who this IT worker is you’re talking about but sounds like a real freerider, fuck that guy.

I’ll give you 3 guesses, and if you get it wrong, it’s off to the Gulags for you.

discussed on other forums is very different than ‘I watched this video on my own in its entirety’. I’d buy that he cribbed from another place though.
