I would have submitted this gym song:
What with all these walrii I have trouble remembering what the next category is. #lololds
Me too #lolweed
Sad songs next. My favorites so far.
I love the smell of Walrus in the morning.
Er…no reveal this morning. Sorry if that was misleading. I was answering the question above.
Yeah my bad there - Still waking up and saw your post. Today was meant to be my reveal but I did it last night instead.
Anyone else getting withdrawal sweats? Let’s try for a reveal in an hour from now. SAD SONGS.
Eh…minor work emergency. There will be a reveal…soonish.
Alright, let’s goooo
These were really difficult to rank. Well done, everyone. Sad songs are my jam right now and there are some real gems here.
Paging @seities @Pauwl @beetlejuice @DodgerIrish @mjiggy @MimosaDef @Jalfrezi @TheDuker @microbet @Smrk4
In 10th place and 1 point - TheDuker - Suzanne Vega – “The Queen and the Soldier”
After three hits in a row, this Duker track doesn’t do much for me. I might send this to my mom. That sounds like a dude-bro burn but it really isn’t. I think she’ll love this. I’ll report back with her rating.
In 9th place and 2 points- mjiggy - The Verve Pipe – “The Freshmen”
jiggy steps out of his late-2010-art-pop-banger-guy shoes to give us this nice mid-90’s nostalgia piece. I remember not liking this at the time, but yeah it’s pretty cool. Has that distinctive mainstream-spin-on-grunge-bands feel. I like this.
In 8th place and 3 points MimosaDef – Family of the Year – “Hero”
The video has a ton of views, so probably many of you know them. I don’t. I love the fingerpicking, especially in the intro. The vocals are fine. Gotta admit to knocking off a couple points because rodeo culture might be nut low humanity. Cool song though.
In 7th place and 4 points - microbet – Patsy Cline – “She’s Got You”
A great song for a jukebox and a cigarette. Or maybe for bad eggs after midnight at Denny’s. In any case Patsy’s voice is so damn smooth that I struggle to do anything but smile. A great song, but a little off-tone for me and this reveal today.
In 6th place and 5 points - DodgerIrish - Elliot Smith – “Between the Bars”
This Elliott guy is going places. A high school friend was in love with Elliot Smith and even dated a guy she didn’t think much of because he played guitar and looked like him. Many have tried to imitate the elegant simplicity of songs like this and failed. A charming, sad, minimal song. Nice one.
In 5th place and 6 points - Seities – La Dispute – “King Park”
“Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself?”
Jesus.
It takes a while to build, but when it gets there it gets there. Seities seems to be really on the ball with these underground dark rock tracks. I’m into it. Probably the most obviously depressing song of the bunch. Category homerun. This is really good and I can’t believe its 5th. Shows the strength of these submissions.
Any of the next four might have won gold in a previous category. Bad luck to have to compete with one another!
** In 4th place and 7 points - Smrk4 - Fiona Apple - “Sullen Girl”
Oh shit. Somehow Fiona Apple had been erased from my memory. She’s great! This song is great! Those bells are maybe a little cheap sounding, but that’s a small thing. Probably more of a 90’s thing, actually. The piano’s great; the rest of the instrumentation is great. Her voice is phenomenal. Love it. Has she done much in the last decade? I’ll have to take a look.
In 3rd place and 8 points - jalfrezi – Mazzy Star – Halah
I’m not sure I have anything clever to say about this. It’s the perfect mood and tone for the category. At first I thought it was too pretty to be sad, but those lyrics do hit the right spot. It took a few listens for that to sink in. Maybe I am a shoegazer. Great track, thanks.
