…before hosting one.
That’s still up in the air but I have some fun category ideas, maybe someone will cohost with me.
** In 7th place and 4 points - Beetlejuice – Refused – “Liberation Frequency”
I mean, yeah. This song’s fucking awesome. Slightly lower points because I know it so well. But yup, a banger. I hosted a community radio show as a teen and almost named the show New Noise. The song’s a little uneven. Chorus amazing. Low-key verse (?) sections are less strong.
Thank god I have an excuse to turn off the Impeachment trial and listen to these instead.
It’s so dependent on the host and participants. I hope some new people will join to add more variety.
Probably never played him on my show, as the hip hop I spun at that point (late 90s, early '00s) was mostly all new. Played it occasionally at the club though. Dre had a nose for beats from the very beginning, and DOC coulda been an all-timer if not for his accident. Oh well. I did love it both then and now though.
Sample is from the link below, which is great, and I can’t believe is not a Jackson5 song.
In 6th place and 5 points - Pauwl – Dinosaur Jr. - “Little Fury Things”
I’ve got a fever, and Dino deep cuts are the only cure. J. Mascis is one of my heroes. I’ve seen the band twice in small venues and they have always been such a treat. I mean, who sings like that? It’s pretty much the perfect terrible singing. I think I’m a spoiled old man now because the crunchy production doesn’t do it for me in the same way that it would have in high school.
In 5th place and 6 points - TheDuker - April Wine – “Sign of the Gypsy Queen”
I know the name, but have never done an April Wine deep dive. Sick solo starting around 2:10. It toes the line of cliché cheesy-ness but stays on the right side. Same with the rest of the song, actually. I feel like a lot of shitty bands have tried to copy the Winos. These guys get it right. That fade out at the end tho, lol. How do they end the song live?
Man, Dinosaur Jr is a little different than I thought. What a rad chorus.
gulp
go frezi go frezi go
In 4th place and 7 points - DodgerIrish - Oasis – “Stand by Me”
Holy shit this is giving me some feels. I know these are some naughty boys, but they sure can write a hook. Oasis was very early high school for me, too. I learned to play guitar with weekly lessons from my uncle. He basically only listened to Ramones, DOA, Iggy Pop, and anything else in that 80’s-punk two power chord vein. A friend brought his guitar over one weekend (my first ever “jam sesh” lol). He played “Wonder Wall” and completely blew my mind. Pretty sure these guys are a-holes but they can sure grind out those satisfying mid-temp licks.
jalfrezi wins now. I thought I was a shoo-in since we both love Dinosaur Jr.
In third place and 8 points - Smrk4 – DMX - “Ruff Ryders Anthem”
Am I supposed to be embarrassed to like this? Don’t care. Like it. I think the kids would say that this track “slaps.” Slap me, DMX. I’m into it. Paging @JohnnyTruant
“Talk is cheap, motherfucker!”
holy shit @Jalfrezi is gonna get to do his reveal as a careening monarch drunk on divine authority.
I can’t wait!
In second place and 9 points - Jalfrezi – The Rolling Stones – “Street Fighting Man”
The Rolling Stones were my dad’s favorite band when I was growing up, so of course as a natural-born contrarian shithead I never gave them a chance at the time. I’ve since gone back and started the seemingly endless process of listening to the back catalogue. Turns out these guys wrote quite a few songs! And a lot of them are great. It’s pretty surreal to think that this was popular music at the time. It is objectively better than Drake/Bieber, inc, right? Popular music was actually better then? Who knows. This is great.
1st place and 10 points, the people’s champ: Microbet - Chuck Berry – “Riding Along in My Automobile”
This Chuck fellow is on to something. And the video is fast cars, so there’s that. I mean, I know that people say that WAAF, and maybe we are, but then there’s music like this. Humans did this. I submit this as exhibit 1 that WAANF.
You have it. I expect you all to bow to my infinite wisdom and accept without question my judgment on all matters profound and trivial. In recognition of your loyalty I will spare you the guillotine.
Lovely to see a Chuck song win. He really did write a lot of good ones.
Thanks cassette, a tense reveal and great walrus delivered in a masterly fashion.
