Walrus Quarantine Version 1 - Reveal Thread

I’m affeared for my choice here

Yeah, I listened to the playlist three or four times before I did a preliminary ranking, then a few more times as I finalised and wrote. Though, let’s face it, no one should have me as a role model.

On the one hand, being familiar with a fair number of the entires helps. On the other, the standings got shaken up a lot upon relisten, even with songs I already know, so I probably have to go through them again to finalize, meaning write up won’t be today.

Alright people gonna try to get to this by later today, need to give everything at least one more listen to make sure I have the rankings just how I want them but I should have plenty of time to do so over the next few hours. Expect write up by evening at the latest (EST), possibly sooner.

Should be interesting to see how people interpreted this category.

Prepare yourselves @eyebooger @SwankyWilder @Lawnmower_Man @CanadaMatt3004

Don’t read too much into the dual messages, I just can’t fit everyone into one and split them up randomly.

This was an enjoyable and challenging category to judge. I had no real reason to select duets as a category other than I thought it might be interesting. There was a nice mix of well-known songs, versions of songs I wasn’t familiar with, and a few new things. Onto the rankings:

In 12th place and apparently attempting to pull a “Jiggy” is All-In Flynn’s entry of

2 Many DJs - No Fun - Push It

I’ve been known to enjoy a good mashup but I have to say I don’t really get why these two songs were put together. Maybe just not my cup of tea. Technically I guess this is a duet but if you were going this direction, may as well have submitted the original “Push It”, which is a sweet ass song.

Man, I thought I might get pushback on it counting as a duet. I did not think anyone would try to dispute that it fuckin’ slaps.

I heard “Push It” again randomly recently, and as a result listened to Salt-N-Pepa’s first album a few times. I’m sure I’m the last to find out, but it’s great stuff.

If iconic songs are allowed, the correct answer was

The Hurt cover is great but second to Ann by a few lengths

I’m not happy about handing out consecutive last place finishes when neither submission was particularly bad but this did not “slap” for me. If I’m going to listen to a version of Push It, it’s the original over this ainec.

No one submitting Heart was a huge leak.

Don’t feel bad, I told you — I love a good roasting.

2 many DJ’s play my home town, Brighton every January/February and it is now my once a year, old enough to know better, oldest raver in town blast. Been for the last 3 years and it is always a great night out. Takes us all about 3 days to recover these days mind.

I think its a great pick AIF

Next up for 2 points in 11th places we have Cassette with

John Prine (RIP) and Iris Dement - In Spite of Ourselves

Full disclosure - I had never heard of John Prine until I heard he was sick with COVID, which apparently he ended up dying from. Very sad. In light of this, getting one of his songs submitted was pretty exciting, but unfortunately this got stale for me about halfway through the first listen. The “jokes” don’t really hold up on repeat plays and eventually it’s like you’re stuck in their quaint, boring relationship with them, except without the endearing twist of being hopelessly in love. My apologies and condolences to the Prine family.

Moving right along to 10th place, with 3 points we have Miliboo’s submission of

Ian Brown and Sinead O’Connor - Illegal Attacks

Per the submitter: Not too subtle antiwar song written by Ian Brown, ex-lead singer of one of UKs goat madchester bands The Stone Roses. This song is actually great, the message is on point, the video is pretty good, and according to the YouTube comments it was banned from the radio at some point? This should have scored higher but ultimately I decided to dock it major points for not being a true duet. I think both singers should have roughly equal parts but this song barely even features Sinead! I’m thankful that I was introduced to this song but unfortunately it ran afoul of the arbitrary rules of the walrus.

Oof. Let’s not start a band. :)

Why not? Maybe we’ll combine our preferred styles and the results will be incredible!
