OK, now the category is rounding into form, with songs that got closer to what I’m looking for. I liked all of these to varying degrees, but since they didn’t have any truly elite parts, they probably won’t be going on any playlists in the near future. There are four songs in this category so I’ll break up the posts, they’re roughly in reverse order (as in the songs that would rank 7-6-5-4).
Ween - Waving My Dick in the Wind (from Cassette)
Considering that I mostly listen to music at work or at home with my toddler around, this song nearly got an incomplete grade. When I did find some time to listen to it, I found it silly but also sort of catchy, even if I couldn’t figure out what the “good part” of it was. Another one I had a hard time ranking, this feels about right though.
Next up in the category is Eyebooger’s submission of
CKY - 96 Quite Bitter Beings
This song has an absolutely banging riff that repeats itself often enough that you don’t feel so bad listening to the rest of it. It’s not quite enough to carry the song higher since I really don’t care for the singing parts, and I would have preferred songs that were more palatable overall, but at least we’re in the ballpark here.
Gotta love this description of the video as well:
Original video directed by Bam Margera, before MTV edited in clips from Jackass.
I’m running out of steam here so I think I’ll finish out the category and save the podium for tomorrow. Two more songs in this one. Spoiler alert: JohnnyTruant will not three-peat with his selection of
Super Beagle - Dust a Sound Boy
I don’t listen to this one solely because I love to yell the intro along with it every time, but it is why it’s on heavy rotation. HIP! HIP!
When I first looked through the submitted songs, this was undoubtedly the one I was most looking forward to listening to. There a band called Super Beagle? And the song is called Dust a Sound Boy, really? HIP HIP!? After JT won the last two categories I just knew I was in for a treat. Unfortunately it didn’t quite live up to the hype upon first listen, although both the song as a whole and the intro bit have grown on me since then. The intro being short hurts it some but at least the second singer interjects himself here and there. I don’t listen to a lot of reggae but most of it is pretty pleasant and this song ended up being no exception, even if it didn’t reach the heights I had hoped for.
Last post of the day, let’s make in snappy. I think the lesson from this thread is to never post before your song is revealed because then you’re the next person up, like here with Miliboo:
Quench - Dreams
Here’s our submitter’s comment:
Ok, sorry about this submission, probably deserves last place, BUT it is a really good category fit imo. This tune was single-handedly responsible for converting my 18yr old self from a pot-smoking Britpopper into an MDMA munching raver. I find it quite cheesy now but still revisit for the pure unadulterated bliss that is 2:30 to 3:00.
Another good lesson is to predict you are going to get last place or do poorly so that I will fall for the reverse psychology. In any case, I think this whole song is actually fine and the way it changes and builds to the part you mentioned is pretty sweet! I used to be into a little bit of trance music in high school and I feel like I’ve heard this song before but it’s probably just that they all sound exactly alike. I nearly made this one it’s own category because it was closer to what I was looking for.
Sorry for the cliffhanger, will be back with the podium tomorrow!
For our song, it actually isnt one of the artist’s better songs overall, but the chorus is absolutely CRUSHED and I hope you all like it as much as both of team Canada does.
Category 5 - An Honorary Podium is Still a Podium (5 pts)
Seems like everyone is angry with this category except for the remaining three people so let’s just get it over with. As stated earlier, these are in order of how I would have ranked them despite everyone getting the same number of points, so in third place is TheDuker with
Foo Fighters - Rope
Is not particularly liking the Foo Fighters another opinion that is going to get me pilloried? I’ve always thought they sounded like the most generic late 90s rock band, although some of their hits are admittedly pretty good. Here’s what Duker said about his selection:
This is a good, but not great, Foo Fighters song. The verses are uninspired. Then the chorus is pretty good I guess. But I probably wouldn’t have given it a second thought except for the bridge which starts at 2:46. It’s like they put everything into a completely different gear and go nuts. It’s also a nice mini-workout where you can do a section of air drums followed by a section of air power chords followed by a section of air lead guitar solo. By the time the bridge is over (at 3:30) I’m exhausted and sort of annoyed that it’s back to the regular part of the song.
Sounds pretty much like all their songs if you ask me, so it’s like fine, but I agree that the bridge and solo are great! The chorus is also catchy enough. You could do worse than an inoffensive rock song that’s elevated by some superb musicianship.
In second place and oh so close to that storybook finish is All-In Flynn with
MGMT - Kids
This is really spot on for the kinds of songs I was looking for in this category: something I already know and like and occasionally listen to but maybe doesn’t hold up as well when it’s given the Walrus treatment. Also probably the best example of how badly I screwed up the wording for this category. This song definitely has a sweet and catchy intro and you can hum along to the chorus but I’m not sure I actually like the verses. I’ll probably still listen to this one again so it makes the podium.
Sorry! I’m doing the reveal from work and there are a lot of ebbs and flows. I guess CanadaMatt wants his first place entry revealed so let’s do it:
Chris Stapleton - Either Way
Definitely the best example of the what would’ve wanted to be submitted here: an otherwise pretty mediocre song with a killer chorus that compels you to listen and ends up elevating the whole experience.
And that’s it, that’s the category. Thanks for all the submissions and sorry to everyone who got screwed by not being able to understand simple rules.
