A reveal on a weekday? Well I’ve just about seen everything now.

Part of me is hoping I’m nodium so I can go to sleep.

The other wants to finally win a Walrus.

Ok, here we go

Category: A song about religion/spirituality by a “non-religious” artist/group

Some general notes:

This took so long because you all did SO well! I didn’t dislike any of these songs, and it made ranking them a terrible chore. If I could, I would give everyone 5 points and be done with it. Well, the top 2 were standouts, but the rest? Really good and fitting.

I got a bunch of different genres, and only one song I instantly recognized, and one I realized I knew after I heard the first few lines. The rest were new to me and all of them fit the category.

So if you nodium in this category, please rest assured that it’s only because my hand was forced, and I had to put the songs somewhere. I’m not lying when I say that 9th-3rd place are interchangeably good, and they all moved around as I listened.

With that, let’s go to church!

This will guaranteed be a drop score for me.

In 9th place for 1 point:

B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) by GZA, Killah Priest

I like rap that tells a personal story. This is one of three rap songs that got submitted and I really like the beat. The lyrics are a tiny bit problematic for me (gets into the toxic “hotep” messaging, as well as some lines that dance really close to anti-Semitic and anti-muslim tropes), and that’s the only reason it’s in 9th. Still, his personal journey and the message about the lies organized religion can tell is compelling.

Not last!

In 8th place for 2 points:

The Master Plan by Oasis

I had a feeling someone would send me this. Not gonna lie, this is one of the few songs by Oasis that I really like. It’s down here because it is so familiar to me. It just didn’t stand out against the new stuff I was sent. I had to put it somewhere, and that’s here. It’s a great song, and this live performance is pretty iconic.

Holy shit I did not see that coming. That was my joker.

As a side note, Killah Priest (the rapper) is a Black Israelite.

Liking the beat and lyrics but still last is weird as fuck.

I’m serious, I really like the song. I like all the submissions. I hated ranking these.

Rounding out the “not-really-bad-but-had-to-put-them-somewhereium”:

In 7th place for 3 points:

Wooden Jesus by Temple of the Dog

This is a perfect example of why I sometimes curse walrus to the heavens. I love Temple of the Dog, I love Chris Cornell’s (RIP) incredible voice, and I like this song. It’s not my favorite TotD song, but it’s still great. It’s here because of familiarity, bottom line. As soon as I heard the first few lines I realized this was on heavy rotation during my edgy militant atheist college days when all the other good little conservative cadets were going to church on sundays and I would sit in my room and get called a heathen by the upperclassmen. But, like much of my time in college, I had blocked away those memories, only to be reminded when this started playing.

Wow, brutal category to rank Sky. Love everything so far and won’t be disappointed where I end up considering the strength of the field.
