Next up in 6th place for 6 points is MimosaDef and “I Can’t Stand The Rain” by Ann Peebles
This will be familiar to everyone and with good reason because it’s a classic catchy soul song and great vocal that gets a small deduction for that familiarity, but competition in this category is fierce hence the placing.
I’m sorry to have to say that if Mimosa had gone with his original choice of FKA Twigs he’d have scored higher.
In 5th for 7 points and in the ascendant is skydiver8 with “The Big Sky” by Kate Bush
I really like this song’s quirkiness and instrumentation which seems ahead of its time (1985), and of course her voice.
As usual with Kate, fuck knows what she’s going on about but that’s never really been the point with her and it doesn’t distract from the song because Kate certainly knows and anyway she’s completely bonkers (in a good way).
It’s not mine to reason why but to appreciate someone who’s at least a genuine artist continuing to produce interesting and varied if sometimes opaque music while coping with the burden of huge success and acclaim at a young age.
In joint 3rd for 9 points each, Rexx and DodgerIrish both with “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane
A brilliant song and an eternal classic of course and one of my favourites from the era, so unfortunately it gets marked down a notch for overfamiliarity.
The cool and talented Slick was a very underrated singer imo. If I wanted to be mean I’d also give it a points deduction for being too short, but I don’t because I feel I’ve been mean enough already in this walrus.
Her natural half-sung voice and quirky, observational lyrics are a wry take on Australian suburbia that I enjoyed a lot, and she’s talented.
It doesn’t break any new ground musically but it’s highly accomplished and I find it likeable in a modern classic rock kind of way. The band are tight too.
Well done zikzak for winning this round. A deserved 11 points for your choice of “Hater” by Various Production
Winner.
wki tells me this is dubstep or grime. Fuck knows what it is and I can barely believe I’m writing this, but I like it a lot.
The lead vocals and especially the backing vocals make the most of the classic winning combination of soulful/romantic voice over experimental electronica that’s worked ever since the Velvets and Roxy. A great choice.
Another entertaining reveal sir! Based on what I have seen so far I would have assumed I was condemning myself to bottom 3 with any dubstep I submitted.
A bold choice from zikzak, and impressive to see your range of musical appreciation cast so wide.
