I thought my Cream song really nailed the category. When I judge my next walrus (and when I judged my last), fitting the category will be very highly weighted.
You say that now…
Will you really be able to give more points to a perfect category fit that’s not as good as a song you love that’s a poor fit?
It did. Your problems were that I’d said I wasn’t judging like that, but also that my own natural thoughts on last songs were different, and most people also got the category correct-ish.
In second place with nine points
Primal Scream - Shoot Speed / Kill Light
These guys are another band I’ve just not really listened to for no good reason. I had Screamadelica on bootleg C90 back in the day, but beyond that nothing. I’d have figured I must have heard this one at some point through school and university, but it didn’t bring back anything.
It’s great stuff, though, a big wall of distorted guitars constantly shifting slightly as the bass works away to keep it all together and moving ever forwards. It’s like punk krautrock, or techno with guitars, or some other NME-style wanky phrase. You can tell I don’t really have much to say except that I really liked it, we’ll see what the submitter put…
I love me some Primal Scream—seen them more times than I care to think about. The Album I always end up going back to is XTRMNTR. The whole thing a howl of outrage via Kraut Rock, The MC5 and the kitchen sink, against the capitalist military industrial complex. the final track is Shoot Speed Kill Light and no matter how loud I’ve been playing it I always turn it up a couple of notches, and as soon as its finished I want to play the whole thing again.
Yeah, much more eloquent, and I swear I’d written my own krautrock line before looking at that. Honest.
In first place with ten points
Eric Johnson - East Wes
Rivaldo may have broken my brain (I think this is him). Why am I putting on guitar-lead, easy listening instrumentals? Even more worryingly, why do I seem to love them? On the one hand this might be playing in a lift in an 80s deodorant advert, on the other it’s amazing. Just listen to that guitar. The tone, the precision, fuck me, it’s lovely.
The song itself is some kind of alien smooth jazz, weaving and folding itself through four or so different sections before elegantly sliding to a halt after just 3 and a half minutes. The drummer calmly marks time in as intricate a manner as he possibly can without ruffling his no doubt immaculately pressed suit, and, as seems to happen a lot, the keyboard player has been told to only play 20% of the time, but when allowed is doing some great noodling round the edges.
I imagine if David Lynch ever made a version of Miami Vice this song would be a key part of its soundtrack, haunting every cursed character that shuffled across the screen. And that’s why it’s in first place.
Primal Scream was me.
The bass on the track was Mani, late of the Stone Roses.
Fun trivia, their frontman Bobby Gillespie was the drummer in noise category entrants Jesus and Mary Chain
They are still great live, you should check them out if you get the chance
OK, I will do the arithmetic and a wrap up post tomorrow. I guess this wait is possibly a downside of the anonymous one, but seems to have worked overall and micro’s coming wonder of technology will solve that. Thanks to everyone who participated, I enjoyed it a lot.
When the Levee Breaks … the most sampled drums in music
Nah, not by a long shot. Sampled 198 times, which isn’t even in the same league as stuff like Funky Drummer (1,577) and Amen, Brother (4,151).
Just wanna say that this was a truly excellent Walrus you ran and I appreciate all the time you spent providing us with some quality entertainment.
I guess it’s possible to have little kids and be 100 years old.
101!
OP
I want Goatnitski fanboi flair
Yes it was me and no I’m not entering anymore walruses lol. Agree that pyat did a great job. I’ll retire with my one first place finish and infinite last or next to last finishes.
Very fun! Proud to me mediocre. Thanks pyat
Well done Pyat - hope it was worth the effort for you.
Here we go, drumroll etc.
It was close in the end, but, by one point @Jalfrezi is the winner. Bouquets and velvet sashes are also handed out to @SwankyWilder, the unlucky first loser, and then @Rivaldo who came up fast in the final two rounds. Don’t they all look lovely.
(Should note that I gave suzzer Pink Floyd and Pauwl Yann Tiersen, which I’m fairly sure is correct, but if not they would swap places in the final standings.)
As is not always traditional but perhaps should be, my top three songs would be:
3 Big Star - Holocaust
2 Sparks - My Baby’s Taking Me Home
1 Lingua Ignota - DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR
I will also add that I listened to a bit of This Mortal Coil yesterday and am excited to delve more deeply.
Once again thanks to everyone who participated and railed, it was most enjoyable. Until we Walrus again…
Well done all!
Now if you’ll excuse me I just found an Apple Music playlist called “I Miss Grunge”.
Have you learnt nothing?!
The self hating part of me wants to look this up, luckily I don’t have Apple Music.
Ooh -so close! Congrats to @Jalfrezi and a big thanks to @pyatnitski for the effort and the constantly entertaining reveals.
Yann Tiersen was me
