Always had mixed feelings about downtempo music. Bands like Massive Attack and Portishead are fantastic. But that song just didnā€™t do it for me.

Donā€™t know. I gotta be in the mood for downtempo to really dig it. Lo-fi is in the same vein.

Madonna - Vogue

" Madonna was just such an icon in the world of fashion. So progressive and pushed the boundaries so much. I love her to death. This song made me feel good about being the person that I am. It spoke to me ā€œYou are fabulousā€ and you know what, she was right ."

Iā€™m pretty familiar with this song but your explanation was amazing. This makes me accept the person that I am. Such a wonderful celebration of life.

niiice. One of my favorite Madonna songs, and you can definitely see how modern artists were so heavily influenced by her.

did you ever see this?

straight up homage to ballroom culture that no one talked about back then but so influenced everything

Fela Kuti ā€“ Zombie

" I think the thing I love the most is how effortless his stuff always sounds. Itā€™s an incredible feat to pack together so many influences, possibilities and anger into music that sounds spontaneous & celebratory, and with a beat that never lets up ."

I didnā€™t state it, but this is what I wanted for this category. This is definitely outside my normal listening. Wikipedia says he was a pioneer of Afrobeat and lists his genres as Afrobeat - Highlife. I had to google both of those. This gets all the bumps as this taught me about different music genres and some history in Nigeria.

Googling this guy is interesting.

ā€œā€¦he made the decision to sing in Pidgin English so that his music could be enjoyed by individuals all over Africaā€

ā€œIn 1978, he married 27 women which are Kikelomo Oseyni, Folake Oladejo, Tejumade Adebiyi, Naa Lamiley, Sewaa Kuti, Omotola Osaeti, Omowunmi Oyedele, Alake Anikulapo Kuti, Shade Shodeinde, Adeola Williams, Najite Kuti, Emaruagheru Osawe, Kevwe Oghomienor, Ihase Anikulapo, Adejonwo Iyabode Ogunitro, Bose Anikulapo Kuti, Lara Anikulapo Kuti, Suru Eriomola, Tokunbo Akran, Funmi Kuti, Omowunmi Afesumo, Laide Anikulapo Kuti, Ronke Edason, Damiregba Anikulapo Kuti, Aduni Idowu, Omolara Shosanya Remilekun Taylor, many of whom were his dancers, composers, and singers. The marriage served not only to mark the anniversary of the attack on the Kalakuta Republic but also to protect Fela and his wives from false claims from authorities that Fela was kidnapping the womenā€

I guess you have to click the hyperlink to open it in a different tab/window.

I donā€™t want to link a different video, since the one I was sent was posted by the artist official music channel and has info on the artist.

I stand by my madonna comments. Sheā€™s a queen and your fashion forum obviously has their shit together.

Damn pyat (and presumably funcrusher) not even waiting for the instrumental category to curb stomp the rest of us.

Thanks for doing this today, made a rough day at work infinitely more pleasant [since I didnā€™t get last place]

Yeah, originally I was bummed that I got third from last but in retrospect I was able to force a complete stranger to listen to my second favorite song of all time and he didnā€™t tell me that he hated it. I consider this first reveal a major win.

For the record I didnā€™t hate it either! I mean I didnā€™t love it but it was fine.

Thanks for a great reveal, Pauwl! A very welcome distraction. Cheers.

I guess I kinda have to post this, but donā€™t take it too serious. Itā€™s just round one.

Let me know if I got any of these wrong.

The Clash obviously a classic. Echo and the Bunnymen I think ā€œBallad of the Dancing Horsesā€ and ā€œThe Killing Moonā€ are better than ā€œLips Like Sugar.ā€ Madonna obv great.

Well, Iā€™m glad to have righted a wrong. The first Walrus I entered had political song as a category, I chickened out of entering that and came last. Doesnā€™t get better than telling a bunch of military junta dickheads exactly where to stick it atop African jazz funk genius. They wrecked his home and killed his Mum and he just went right back to it.

Shit. You won? I thought you were the track you responded ā€œeasy gameā€ to.

Sorry, I said that when I knew Iā€™d won.
