As much as I am a big disliker of Facebook, my son has been on us for getting him a VR headset, and the Oculus just cant seem to be beat right now in the strengths department, so we pulled the trigger, with the express knowledge that our Oculus account will be specifically a dummy facebook account and no personal information can be posted through it.
That being said… its pretty cool, and something new to me. So post your experiences here. What games and experiences should my teenage son and I be on the lookout for? What are the best and worst things to do with the Oculus. How do I get my money’s worth?
I think Facebook is wise to this now and will eventually force your to drink a verification can link a real account.
I bought a Samsung VR headset to play Half-Life: Alyx last year and gave up about 2 hours in because it got too difficult, but that game and Rick & Morty: Virtual Rickality are pretty fun.
my son got one in June, hes 10 but all 3 of mine play it and like it.
Beat Saber is fun, we also had i expect you to die which is supposed to be like james bond type stuff, i think they liked that alot but its pretty short and little replay value, i haven’t played any of either really myself.
I read that Half Life Alyx was fun as otatop said, probably best shooter on there from what I read.
I’m not into games, but using VR to see a bunch of pitches intrigues me. No way I’m strapping a controller to my bat though. Thing would be embedded in my tv screen after 5 swings.
I find the general experience boring and tough to keep up with.
I bought my first ever sweatband today, because I had so much fun using an exercise program in VR that I was dripping sweat into the headset.
For like, the first time in my life I am genuinely excited to work out on a daily basis. Thats pretty incredible.
If anyone has some great workout apps they recommend please put them here.
Oh, and meditation. Another thing ive struggled with in the past due to lack of visual stimuli. They make some amazing options. The one ive been using simulates a string of flowing dots in and out to indicate breath timing. My mind feels clearer and sharper after just a few days.
Let me expound on this just a bit after thinking about it.
While essentially all you need is the headset, there is one major obstacle going that route.
The Oculus store has a lot of great games and experiences… however, there is a limit to the availability of certain things. There are a number of highly popular and exciting VR options (Like Skyrim VR and Half Life Alyx) that are not available on the Oculus out of the box.
Accessing content that is PC exclusive requires two major things
a link cable to connect your Headset to your computer or a virtual desktop. The Virtual desktop app is great but is 19.99 to download. You also need a very strong router or will experience latency issues. The link cable does away with latency issues but is more expensive and ties you to having to be close to your computer so its non-ideal.
And 2) a VR ready computer. This is the big hurdle. Anything over 3 years old is going to be a bit behind what you need to really run things well.
So, if you arent interested in some of the more top of the line games, it works really well.
Speaking of, I bought mine on Friday night and it was delivered on Saturday morning. It’s pretty amazing how far technology has come (I haven’t played a console video game in about a decade). Really really cool experience. That said, I might return it. I got in about a half hour with it on Saturday and that’s been it. I forgot I have two young kids so I’ll just never get a chance to use it. Maybe I can buy one around Oculus 15.
