got sf6 to see if i could still hang and my god it has the worst ui of any game ive ever seen. why they think a fighter title needs some open world interface is beyond me. took nearly an hour to figure out how to default to classic controls in ranked (once i found ranked at all, which is buried behind exhausting tutorials with cringey, poorly animated characters and dialogue)

turns out they added some quality of life buffs to blanka and hes still a monster. ranged command grab mixup, multiple overheads and combo mixups, his hop back roll mixup got even nastier and they gave it a shoto input now which is amazing, no more charging. i love how i can shoto input his electric cancel now rather than mash punch and wreck my hands every combo. he can drop zoning bombs now too, seems like his playstyle got even more annoying (he was already very annoying when played right in 4 amd 5)

FF VIII, disc 3

Except for the part where I had to search the whole map for the White SeeD ship, this was A+ stuff. Lots of plot development and fun dungeons, plus I’m starting to get into the junction system and the card game.

In my defense I am really bad at these timed dodges and parries.

There’s an audio cue for when the attack is coming, and paying attention to that can be easier than watching the animation

update. i am terrible and way better at modern controls than my ego would like to admit. it just punishes low ranks and gets punished at higher ranks

the thing with modern controls is i do not have to charge abilities. am a charge character main - honda/bison/blanka

blanka poke mixups are still undefeated so i think no matter the control scheme i just play him but the simplified controls consistently feel better but as a purist make me feel gross. havent piloted bisons kit yet

spent much of the last week just grinding my characters and finishing their builds to the point in the story you recruit orlandeau and the game is basically over in terms of difficulty.

ramza - pretty basic maxed out faith and magic summoner/black mage that can one shot people with flare or just cast golem/carbuncle (aoe reflect). it’s kind of boring but a necessary role.

the calculator - arithmetick, time magic for hasting herself, max magic faith, has equip gun for the glacial gun which can snipe across the map for 250+. she has teleport and knows every single spell and is basically a god and first turn mass cast death wipes out normal enemies before the fight even starts usually. she can cast mass quick, mass raise, and is basically just teleporting into a corner most fights and raining hell or support spells as needed

dancer/ninja - finished this character first, she has invisibility react, usually end up casting the mass status dance at start of fight, sneaking up to objective bosses to start hitting hard up close. pretty basic but she is a menace. she has fly and have to finish her brave stat but otherwise been done for a while

chemist/samurai - he only needs masamune for the aoe haste and hes done. he is the ultimate support and is almost impossible to kill , the aoe support spells from samurai + items are pretty hard to replace. i built him to be very fast

then i just replaced my temu ramza (anselm) with orlandeau who you can build how you want but is completely op. it’s gg.

auto x potion reacts on all my guys and i dont think i should get stuck on dumb fights for a while. i hit close to a million gil so just bought every item, theres some stealing fights left to get gear, and i need to recruit cloud, but the game is over. weird difficulty curve where you start out through the midgame its so ridiculously hard then you reach a point where you just become unstoppable. at this point youre so tired of hard fights it becomes a welcome change. you can just grind at this point for stat min maxing but it becomes pointless - i’m trying to finish the game in the low 40’s level which is very difficult at this difficulty

man, i remember trying to steal masamune as a kid and being so frustrated - stealing is a low probability unless you can get a lucky stop or disable on him, which is hard, because he can wipe your party out first. beating him isnt hard, ramza one shots him, but theres also the two ninjas that can one shot people, so you really have to win first turn and get a low probability steal

buckled up for a long night of save scumming a 12% steal rate but got masamune first try, lets go! now my chemist samurai can aoe haste/regen the party every fight

if i was reallly really min maxy which this run feels like if i wanna finish low level, i go back to samurai with equip gun for glacial gun (which scales off magick) and pump his faith/magick somehow (samurai abilities scale off magick for some weird reason)

i wanna get ninja on orlandeau for the dual wield save queen/excalibur knight swords but the amount of grinding involved there is significant and would make me 50+

shes a problem. aoe holy’s one shotting normal enemies, holy absorb on orlandeau’s excalibur. perfect scaling and faith, although speed could be better but with critical quick, and time mage offspec where she can cast quick with 100% success in hard fights, shes a real problem. if she is alive you cannot lose. one of the lucavi fights where youre fighting the summoner that can wipe your party every turn, she just casts mass raise every turn and unless they can get to her deaths dont really matter at all.

the teleport movement is a 3000jp ability (!!) but so critical to this class - she can always get to parts of the map no one can touch her. this is such a hard character to build and she has good zodiac compatibility which was just dumb luck but its insane.

i can grind errands to get everyone to have teleport but its a lot of work, might do it if im bored. reddit thinks the ability sucks but it is basically guaranteed 4 squares away from you ignoring height and is really valuable in calculator fights where you cast off elevation a lot

Finally beat Champion of the Night in Hades 2 (32 heat underworld 24 heat overworld). Last piece of the puzzle wasn’t git good, it was git lucky.

It as all about the judgement arcana card. Starting with it starts you too weak.

But if you start with Crystal Figurine, and can get judgement after the first boss fight, you are on your way to a full arcana board which is massive.

I never reset if I didn’t get judgement after the first boss fight, but both wins were after I did.

Been replaying Elden Ring. Gotten through most of the game without getting hard stuck but I’m level 130 and have been struggling with Malenia for 3+ hours again.

Trying to determine if at any point I spiritually give up and equip a shield

lol what’s your build?

Dual Bloody Scimitars +25 on each, Light Load with equipment, Dragoncrest Greatshield for damage reduction.

God I fucking love Elden Ring.

I think throwing an icy pot can interrupt her waterfowl dance if that works with your code of honor

That’s rarely what gets me unless I’m directly underneath her when she starts and I don’t have enough room to create space for the first two attacks.

The one in phase 2 where she stays in the air and sends out like 6 avatars then does the stab attack currently messes me up. It’s also just not having enough runs on phase 2 to know when my attack opportunities are.

I always had to get lucky with her attack patterns in the second phase. One key is running away from her rot explosion, and another key is remembering that she doesn’t have much poise.
