US withdrawal from Syria and the Turkish invasion of Rojava

Did the NYT not think that was newsworthy until today?

We didn’t even get the good Beatles. Just Paul and Ringo.

Yeah I found it weird to see this stuff happened in May.

So basically, this is going exactly how everyone other than Trump said it would go, except perhaps faster and even worse.

Yeah, now we’re left hoping that Syria and Russia will be better partners. I don’t think they could be worse. But, I don’t think they will be as effective. Turkey was very reluctant to even skirmish with US forces, but there could be some serious battles between Syria and Turkey right where all these people live. The winners in that will only be ISIS/Al Queda/etc.

Yeah, and Trump will just go on proclaiming that he totally wiped out ISIS and all is well, and 40% of the country will eat it up… and of course they’d give zero fucks about the Kurds even if we magically made them understand the situation. So depressing.

I forgot to mention the people who always win in such things: war contractors.

Even more sick is that if ISIS comes back, rather than Trump taking the blame, it’s just another opportunity for him to call for an even worse Muslim ban/attacking Muslims domestically. Which Trump will relentlessly do with glee.

Like the way he went after Somalian refugees for no reason other than vicious racist perceived opportunism last week 100x over.

Not to mention that Assad could carry out his own purge/murders of leaders of the surrendered Kurdish state. Or anyone else who promoted separatism.

Assad should realize he can’t govern Syria without some Kurdish autonomy.

Maybe. I wouldn’t put anything past him

Here’s the agreement, as per a widely reported thread on twitter.

1/ The abolishment of the #SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces), with all the current Kurdish forces and military groups joining the 5th Corps (Assault Legion) under Russian control

2/ A solid guarantee of full Kurdish rights in the new Syrian constitution with autonomy which will be agreed upon by Kurdish leadership & Syrian state.

3/ Joint coordinated effort by Syrian/Kurdish forces to remove Turkish presence in northern #Syria including #Afrin (Idleb doesn’t count)

4/ #Manbej & #Kobani were agreed upon for #SAA to enter quickly, whilst #Hasakeh has seen a wide scale deployment of Syrian troops, this will continue in #Qamishly and other joint areas

5/ With Syrian forces now on the border area with #Turkey it’s clear that this starts a new phase in the 8-year-long war where some sort of endgame is now taking shape - all border areas and administrational centres will be taken over by the Syrian government

6/ Within one month Kurdish leadership with start to take up some official roles within the current Syrian government to ease the transition period of N. #Syria until an new constitution/government is formed in the future

7/ #Tabqa in #Raqqa was also on the agreement, Syrian forces entered the city and took control of the military airbase earlier today

8/ #Russia had brokered a similar deal a few days ago, yet it was rejected by #Damascus who wanted more concessions from the #SDF.

This sucks, but it’s better than counting on the US or getting bombed by and having Turkish (German) tanks rolling through your streets.

Turkey is amazing at the volume and brazeness of their propaganda.

And where are all the people who were screaming about how this was NOT good for Russia? We’re literally handing over a city to them, and blowing up our own shit on the way out because we’re not taking the time to move it and it’s too sensitive to leave behind.

Everything Trump is doing in Syria is treasonous.
