US Kills Soleimani in Airstrike

Anyone know if there is any way to quickly invest in the Iranian rose market?

A quote from the front page of WaPo:

Soleimani was “actively developing plans” to attack American troops and diplomats, said Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

To be clear, even if we take the statements of this administration at face value, this one is particularly bullshit. I’m sure Iran was literally always actively developing and maintaining plans to attack American forces–it’s called planning and war gaming. We do it too with all of our potential adversaries, and given the rhetoric from this administration Iran would have been stupid to not do the same.

But this rationale gets spit out by the mainstream media with no critical analysis at all, as if it alone justifies the illegal assassination of a foreign head of state.

Like I’m not saying it can’t happen, but the salient differences between now and 2002/03 are too numerous to list

One thing that Iran could do to retaliate is to close the Strait of Hormuz with mines, which would send world oil prices through the roof. I’m not an expert, but my understanding is that this is unlikely because it would hurt Iran itself quite badly. It’s one example of something Iran could do where “just bomb them” is not a solution.

There are also plenty of asymmetrical warfare techniques they could lean on that would make retaliatory bombing hard to justify. We might be finding out shortly just how resilient our infrastructure is to repeated, targeted cyber attacks.

75% oppose it when it’s some far off hypothetical they don’t think can actually happen. Once the United States is in a war, it’ll poll at +30 or better. Especially once the likes of CNN, Pelosi and Schumer are talking about the big bad Iranians.

After a few years, people will realize that the US messed up and it’ll poll poorly. But that’ll be well into 45’s second term.

I’m going to guess: not very.

I think this is good for Trump as long as it doesn’t escalate much further but I’m not so sure the US has an appetite for yet another major Middle East conflict. It’s probably not THAT good for him; everyone already forgot about the last ISIS guy he killed. The Iraq war is very unpopular and still pretty fresh in people’s minds; also it’s not like there had actually been real attacks by Iranians, just the protest at the embassy which would’ve been forgotten in a few days otherwise.

Called it. Predicted war with Iran during Trump’s first term.

Hopefully, anti-Trumpers see this for what it is: this century’s Gulf of Tonkin incident

Bingo, at least in my opinion. That’s what they’ve been doing anyway (again in my opinion). This is big enough I could be very wrong, but Iran have the nerves to just bluff this out on the world stage, meanwhile start to target as much stuff as they can whilst maintaining ‘deniability’.

I do think Trump would bomb anyway at some point, though.

Fuck it. Iran should just suicide attack Israel in response. US is gonna go on the attack whether you like it or not. Might as well hit something while you can.

War with Iran is a horrible idea. This ain’t gonna be Iraq where the whole country was decimated in 3 weeks. Iran has a legit strong military and more difficult terrain to fight on. America would have to implement the draft to get a large enough military to take them down.

lol he deleted, 100% was informed and bragging on twitter

what the fuck is this reality

America will attack Iran from Israel. Might as well strike them before they strike you.

He didn’t get a polling bump from the Syrian Airbase strike or the head of ISIS dying.*

*538 average from before the events and a month after. Either approval stayed the same or went back to pre incident number in 4 weeks or less.

This happened like 30 minutes ago.

25 year old male currently visiting came to me and asked in full earnestness if I thought his feet were flat.
