At some point one of the parties involved needs to decide that they don’t need the last word and the opinion of a random anonymous stranger online won’t ruin your online “reputation”.

I dunno. If this forum wants to attract new users and more female posters, having a thread devoted to the awareness of how non-sexist UP is, containing sexist drivel, seems like not such a great idea.
Barring some obvious/ridiculous exceptions I’m contemptuous of behaving differently for the sake of attracting new users. Are we a place where someone might post sexist drivel? Yeah, looks like it. That happened and that’s this place. Are we a place where someone will point out sexist drivel? Obviously we are that as well. Any noobs can see the truth and decide for themselves whether or not they want to be part of the community.

No one’s saying we should behave differently, but I see your point, and accept also that most people lurk for a while before jumping in with posts, but I’d rather see this whole thread exiled to France than have it here on the front page with all its gross and unrepresentative stupidity for newbs to see immediately.

This type of fighting is just politics in miniature. I think it should be expected of a politics forum that doesn’t employ heavy-handed WN-style moderation that prunes things in an attempt to keep things orderly.

I don’t see that as being in any way sexist. He’s describing his reactions to being in close proximity to a woman who he has some sort of relationship with.
And anyway he’s French so he has carte blanche to get away with all sorts of libidinous observations in the name of Art.
I’m sure he’d have been capable of writing in a non sexist way about the desires brought about by the sight of young women’s underwear hanging in public if he’d wanted to.
Did you consider the audiobook, or wanted the literary challenge of scaling the north face of the Eiger?
Right, I was just thinking hearing it in a French accent (if such an audiobook exists) might make it easier and more evocative.

People say this all the time, but meat-eaters are way more in your face about how much LOVING MEAT makes them A MAN and is PART OF THEIR IDENTITY, especially if they’re talking to vegetarians.
