W = Well-Tempered Clavier, book 1 / prelude 1 by J.S. Bach + Ave Maria by Charles Gounod

Bobby McFerrin explains…

loose ends…
—the most famous Ave Maria is by Schubert
—the concept album was invented by Schubert too; for W here’s his song cycle Winteriesse
(1) my favorite recorded version; (2) a good live version
—Whitacre, Eric = contemporary classical choral guy with a drenching sound:
A Boy and a Girl (here are the lyrics)

Is it a cover if you wrote the damn song? Carole King co-write this Brill Building offering with Gerry Goffin and it was a #1 hit for the Shirellles. King later used it to fill out her classic album Tapestry. Those backing vocals? Joni Mitchell and James Taylor.

Here’s the Shirelles version for comparison:

These guys broke up after a couple of albums, but this is still pretty groovy.

This version comes from Optimo’s How to Kill the DJ, Part 2 mix, and it’s a half-step faster than the original version, and I like it a lot more.
