If the Russians have given up on Odesa and want to focus on Donbas, it would make a lot of sense to fall back to the Dnieper. It’s too wide for temporary bridges.
OTOH, Kherson is the biggest prize taken so far. If the Russians take a stand in the city, it will get ugly. The most intense urban fighting we have seen is Bucha, Kherson is bigger. One reason Mariupol is holding out is the Russians prefer to bounce the rubble and starve them rather than send infantry to kick in doors.

It would also be a sign that they don’t think they’re in a sustainable position right now, even with all the retreats from the north. Which means their remaining fighting force must be fairly weak.
I think if they thought they could possibly hold Kherson, even without advancing westward for years, they probably would.

Yes, exactly this.
But let’s say you explained it to them days after it happened. The reflex would be, “I’m sure it didn’t happen as you say.”. Obviously if you ask them now about something that happened a couple of decades ago, that’s very different.

The military and US government basically pretended it didn’t happen. The only punishments were some light reprimands for senior officers and then one guy got demoted. We did pay a few thousand dollars to each of the victims families.
