Ukraine, Russia, and the West

Why didn’t Putin invade Ukraine when Trump was president? Does that suggest that Russia is actually less irrational because they don’t know how Trump would have responded?

Disclaimer: I’ve no idea if the following guy speaks sense or not, but he seems to.

Trent offers up an explanation as to why we might not be seeing much of the Russian air force:

TLDR: An abandoned, intact Pantsyr like the one Ukraine captured potentially gives them up to date insight into the Friend or Foe codes (IFF) for Russian aircraft. It might further allow them to compromise the Russian air defence network such that defense systems couldn’t tell the difference between friend and foe should aircraft be deployed.

Also can’t they just change the codes?

You would’ve thought not, but these things do apparently come with an “integrated IFF system” (whatever that actually means) and there does seem to be a distinct lack of Russian airplanes knocking about.

I’d have thought there would be some link between this IFF system and some central command unit or other that updates codes and what have you. Maybe communication is both ways? You’d still imagine that they could just unplug individual units from the system though. I dunno, maybe it’s nonsense.

Edit: Reading the replies “maybe it’s nonsense” looks like a favourite.

I think it’s about not wearing uniforms

Maybe part of the trick with changing the codes is that they have to change the codes in every plane and every single piece of air support but this one. A broadcast isn’t going to cut it.

Maybe Putin wasn’t ready. He might have feared an invasion before the election would damage Trump’s re-election chances while a Trump win would put him in the best possible position to execute his plan.

This is a problem that cryptography solves very well.
No idea if they use the good solutions though.

If the US lost similar equipment there would be a quick procedure to zeroize these codes and other sensitive data before abandoning. Also codes would change almost immediately as an additional precaution, which requires massive coordination, like asking everyone to patch software to the latest release, but US military is pretty good at organizing stuff like that. I can only speculate how Russia is handling it but my guess is not as good and they’re losing equipment faster than they’d be able to coordinate changing codes in the best case. My guess is IFF codes are effectively worthless to them but I’d also be surprised if they’re letting that ground their Air Force when they can just yolo and try to avoid friendly fire the old fashioned way.

If “24” hasn’t taught us anything else, it taught us that you can never just change the codes.
