There are countries that the USA is obligated to defend with the lives of our own troops by treaty. There are conditions to getting into such a treaty that are very reasonable. There are responses and support offered to countries outside the treaty that also are intended to deter a rational actor from invasion. That they didn’t work doesn’t mean Ukraine was on a green light for invasion allowed
I’m generally sympathetic to the idea, but it almost sounds like you don’t think this tiered system was by design. It’s even baked into our language, about how we talk about the “first world” (NATO), “second world” (former Soviet Bloc and allies), and “third world” (OK to plunder, historically have been plundered). Non-nuclear countries with economies based on natural resource extraction rather than manufacture of goods are always going to be seen as potential exploits more than peers and trading partners.
Yeah, I get that it’s by design. I don’t like the design, and think we should be doing more to fix it.
Is he really threatening, or just pretend threatening.
This is where the appeasement issue becomes even more problematic.
I accept that Putin wants to reunite the USSR. If he now says he wants to invade those countries, I want to take him seriously. Last time he threatened to invade someone, he did, to the surprise of many.
If only goal is to prevent nuclear war, we should pragmatically concede Finland and Sweden, and honestly anything else he wants.
If we decide that cost is too much, then we might as well draw our own lines clearly in the sand.
Can someone pay him what he wants and then it’s immediately seized? Because that would be fun.
how sure are you that kyiv is only hours from falling?
That’s going to take fixing USA#299. I hope what your saying comes true in my lifetime, but lmao we are way more likely to seeing a Trump dynasty than fixing our own imperial ambitions.
6 mos ago it peaked at $21, now it has rallied back up to 4 cents
if only i could throw $100 on that as a pity party. but … sanctioned.
Doesn’t that mean that Russia has 4 days to conquer Ukraine to be on schedule?
Russian propaganda is a lot subtler than some imagine, hell it’s probably more subtle than Trumpism:
RU MoD announced 498 russian soldiers killed and 1600 wounded. so it’s a couple of orders of magnitude up from their previous official assessment but still an order of magnitude less than what it really is.
Same.
