Ukraine, Russia, and the West

It’s extremely frustrating! It’s in the title.

Ah

Yes it’s a tragedy. But you must submit to your nearest superpower at all times.

If all nukes were suddenly rendered useless, we’d be at war right now. I wonder what China would do.

No he doesn’t. He is just trying to pretzel his way out of a completely incorrect world view of NATO to save face for being wrong for decades.

I don’t get why these look how Big my bookcase intellectuals can’t just admit they are ever wrong about anything.

I think if all nukes were rendered useless Mearsheimer would have even less of an argument than this forum attributes to him!

Same reason nobody can on internet forums lol - EGO

This is the “if that bitch didn’t look at that other guy I wouldn’t have hit her despite all the other times I hit her” argument.

It’s absurd tbh, Putin himself contradicts this argument.

Must be tough to have you’re entire careers academic work fall apart in a few weeks

non sequitur, but one of my favorite “rate my room” views:

His entire argument is that morality has to be subservient to realism here and you’re straight back into moral argument. This is like before the Iraq War when people were like, don’t you care that Saddam is a tyrant? You’re fine with using chemical weapons against the Kurds I guess, wow, shows just how heartless you leftists really are. Subsequent events in Iraq are a pretty good argument that a sober analysis of what it is actually possible to achieve should trump shallow moralizing.

In his mind the fact that Russia stated very clearly, repeatedly, that they would not tolerate a Europe-aligned Ukraine, that Ukraine then aligned itself with Europe and that they are now facing invasion, means that he is correct that Ukraine should have paid more attention to what Russia wants. Any question that begins “but doesn’t Ukraine have the right…” is just irrelevant, in his worldview.

That was the early 1930s dude, this is like arguing that World War II should be the chief determinant of current relations between Germany and France.

The entire Euromaidan/Revolution of Dignity was centred around the question of whether Ukraine would align itself with Europe or Russia:

The protests were sparked by the Ukrainian government’s decision to suspend the signing of the European Union–Ukraine Association Agreement, instead choosing closer ties to Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union.

It was obvious that the trajectory of the country was alliance with Europe regardless of what representations the new government made about their intentions.

The plan for NATO countries to send Soviet warplanes to Ukraine has fallen through, no planes will be given. One reason given is the amounts talked about would be a large percentage of the donors’ Air Forces.

Ah but don’t you see, NATO definitely bares no connection to EU alignment

You do realize that the person who said it lost the hand, though, right?

Come on man. The argument is the Ukrainians have chosen what’s happening now over being subservient to Putin. There’s no moral question involved.

Messerwhatever is arguing that the West should have shunned Eastern Europe to appease Putin, and Ukraine should have let themselves become Belarus to appease Putin. I feel like you’re missing that or else I have no idea what you’re arguing here.

If you need to overlook these kinds of details to get in a Teddy KGB reference, then that’s what you do. You can’t have enough Teddy KGB.

Putin worked with perpetrators, and no one was punished. Furthermore, Putin’s screed at the start of this hardly treats Ukrainians as people with agency. Should Ukraine just let Putin round up and jail or execute anyone on the alleged blacklist?

It’s fucking weird how I haven’t seen any of y’all argue that Palestinians should shut the fuck up because of what Israel wants for them.

you guys need to pay attention to the soldiers videos. VSU is equipped basically identically to a US soldier. simple things, kneepads, gloves, a lightweight helmet, body armor.

and compare to the captured or surrendering orcs. they look like the soviet 80s army. their uniforms and armor doesn’t fit, mre’s are 7 years after expiration. VSU are calling them hobos. they don’t appear to know where they are going. the tank maybe flashy on the surface, but it’s a shitshow under the hood. they advance so slowly it has to be refilled several times before kyiv.

then there’s the tactics and logistics.
