It’s pretty legit, this link is a bit dated:
I think it’s just incredibly galling to see the architects of US imperial aggression of the past 30+ years get on their high horse about another country deigning to attempt 1/10th of the evil and human suffering that the US creates. Condoleezza Rice is responsible for more innocent deaths than Putin could be in 5 lifetimes but here she is nodding along with the notion that invading a sovereign country is a war crime. The mind boggles.
Chomsky has been demonsied for his anti war stance for decades, now all of a sudden everyone is pro the rights of small countries not to get invaded by the big boys on the block and he still can’t talk about the evil of the us hegemony?
I think another lesson from Napoleon is you can’t leave any path for warmongering leaders back into power after they do this shit. Letting Saddam stay in power after the Gulf War proved to be a very costly mistake. I don’t know how this ends for Putin, but getting him out of power should be priority #1, even if his forces retreat. The world can’t be peaceful while people like him control militaries. Easier said than done, I know.
cW, i recommend caution before jumping to conclusions, especially on a subject that tide is turning for russia.
russia hasn’t even been able to take out power or internet in kyiv or kharkiv yet. if you were an overwhelming brute force, wouldn’t that be the first thing you achieve?
a new option in the discourse. if no-fly zone is unworkable, ukraine could instead be supplied with patriot missiles, and force russia to ground their jets
I am pissed this guy is a Michigan fan. Nothing but non stop flow of bs out of Deace’s mind.
From a real politik perspective leaving Saddam in power wasn’t really a costly mistake for the US, but removing him in the Iraq War was.
I’m not sure, but if they’re willing to intentionally harm civilians en masse and level cities, and NATO is not willing to step in for fear of starting nuclear WW3, I don’t see how they can be stopped.
I think the idea is that they are stopped at the borders of NATO countries, and then slowly bled by a guerrilla resistance for many years while isolated from the west internationally until they economically collapse. It’s awful for anyone in Ukraine, and maybe Georgia and Moldova but will probably work unless Putin can install friendly puppets in the west through propaganda.
they don’t have enough tactical missiles to keep this going forever. they really don’t have enough troops for such a country as big as ukraine either, but i suppose having scores of conscripts sitting behind the frontlines in voronezh also brings some value.
bottom line, russia seemed to be preparing for a blitzkrieg, but didn’t have strong enough first punch.
what they are looking at now is a long war at best, and they absolutely have not prepared for a long war. not even close.
Man it’s looking grim for Ukraine unless the Russian economy collapses first. No city can hold out long if the Russian army is willing to drop fuel-air explosives on civilian areas.
popcorn
Yeah, that sounds about right.
Yeah I think holding Ukraine in total would be hard, if not impossible. But unless they’re about to run out of cluster bombs and vacuum bombs, they don’t have to hold anything they can just destroy it and kill thousands upon thousands until they get what they want.
And Putin may be willing to use chemical or nuclear weapons, too.
i see today is my turn to tell you guys to chill out.
Chomsky has been spending decades talking about NATO aggression and how further expansion would leave ANY Russian leader no choice but to lash out militarily.
This entire Ukraine war demonstrates why every single western nation and ex-soviet country chooses on their own free will and fruition to join NATO.
Putin has been telling us and showing us he wants to re-create the Soviet Union geographically via conquest or vassal state and those European countries should not join NATO because it will make Putin mad. Meanwhile Ukraine is being leveled to the ground. Maybe joining NATO to avoid being Ukrained was the point of NATO expansion.
Noam Chomsky is allowed to be right about US imperialism in the middle east and 100% wrong about NATO.
His next lecture will be a combination of rehashed broken records about Iraq, USA bad, while Ukraine just got levelled to the ground.
Yeah, this. Saddam had been effectively neutralized after Gulf War I. The real lesson from the Gulf Wars and Afghanistan is that “regime change” is a fool’s errand. No one put into place by a foreign power is going to have a shred of legitimacy to their rule should you ever leave. You can go for straight up brutal conquest and permanent seizure of territory, but trying to install a new government of your choosing and then hoping you can walk away cleanly is never going to work.
I can’t read these war maps well. I need a giant map table where I can move pieces around with a croupier rake.
