Ukraine, Russia, and the West

Musk is getting sooooooooo much free press for this. These things better be actually functional and doing some good.

Ah - well anyway

There’s borders and then there’s borders. Borders through which Germany would invade through have always been the most touchy ones. It isn’t surprising that bringing the Polish corridor into Nato would eventually trigger a “not one step more” response in Ukraine.

Right, Putin can’t want to have an invasion of Russia go through Poland, so he’ll annex territory that borders Poland. Genius.

That’s partly true, but they will also consider Nato capacities. Nato has the capacity for a deep drive into Russia. The chess pieces were put into this arrangement in 1945.

Recreating imperial greater Russia is not the only drive – they think about real politik and geostrategic balances, too. I’m not disagreeing that Russia seeks hegemony and satellites. But the insistence that Nato isn’t in the equation is obtuse.

This is not military targeting. This is punishment for attacking the Russian patrols yesterday.

There are ground stations in Poland that should provide service to northwest Ukraine. It looks like Lviv and Lutsk might be just inside the service area.

There’s definitely an open plane that extends through Ukraine into Russia/Moscow. Thing is, this isn’t 1812 or even 1941. If you lose a war these days it aint goona be because 1000 tanks have rolled into Moscow, it will be because Moscow, St. Petersburg, Volgograd (Stalingrad), etc, have been reduced to cinders from 1,000 or 10,000 miles away. Putin talks tough about nukes, but even he knows it goes both ways. You can’t bluff call an all-in.

I don’t want to continue to rustle Putin’s jimmies, as with a no fly zone, but I don’t mind pushing him more than I would have in the past. I fully expect at least an accidental nuclear war will wipe out much of humanity in the next 100 years (maybe 1/3 chance), so I’m a bit more inclined to see the west push back against putin than I have been in the past, even given his nuclear threats. He has gotten away with a lot of bullshit (Georgia, Chechnya, 2014 Ukraine, Syria) because the west has always played the rational actor.

the tactic has been to target them via air when they are outside of settlements, unless engaged. also, it makes no sense to engage them at the border where they are close to reinforcements. once they are 20-50 km into ukraine, they are the sitting ducks.

Starlink needs ground stations? I thought it was direct satellite to dish?

literally sitting in front of a napoleon bust

Yes, as a matter of fact.

The Polish corridor is a basic security interest of any Kremlin – that’s why Churchill and FDR acquiesced at Yalta. (That and the occupation by the red army.)

Russia is Iraq with nukes and a lot land. There’s no reason to continually accept geostrategic balance with a barely functional petrostate.

Hitler had plenty of appeasers in the US as well.

Yes there is. Armageddon.

No. He has videos of himself in Ukraine prior to this. Like a lot of people in Ukraine, he didn’t think this would happen.

Hitler currently has plenty of enthusiastic supporters in the US!

Did they call for arming the Czechoslovakians like I did for the Ukrainians?

It’s possible to both back Ukrainian independence and be critical of Nato expansion.

Based on the number of times this has shown up on my, and others, youtube suggestion makes me think it’s being monetized and youtube is being paid per click by some third party.

I’ve watched it, and many other things. It’s a data point but I don’t think it’s convincing. If Russia wanted influence of Ukraine or anyone else, they should have been working hard to improve the lives of Ukrainians over the last 30 years instead of imposing criminal regimes. Russia’s idea of soft power is cheating at the olympics, messing with the west, and hoping not to get caught. 1970 called, it wants it geopolitical tactics back.
