Ukraine Invasion 2: no more Black Sea fleet for you

Considering how little moral actual Russian trained troops have and how effective they have been, having a bunch of conscripts doesn’t scare me too much. Russian conscripts have shown to be mostly useless in this war, cannon fodder with zero moral.

If Russia was to conscript millions of soldiers and just overwhelm every single Ukrainian city, then I would be worried.

I assume you meant “morale” but I first read it as “morals”.

There are pipelines carrying Russian gas overland across Ukraine. They don’t need Elon Musk’s subs to shut off the gas.

(The grammar pedant in me has been suppressed by the humorous value.)

Blow those up too.

Nothing prevents us from orbiting an AWACS over the Black Sea just south of Crimea. We even have an air base in Turkey they could fly from.

Seems weird we haven’t heard more about this kind of stuff. If the Russians didn’t have their own system, I’d guess it’s like the natural gas, in that both sides need it. Maybe the Russian GPS doesn’t work or we’re jamming them too.

Timely, I just stumbled across this:

So most of the country, but only half of the Donbas and almost none of the Russian border.

Saw a little tidbit re: GPS today. A lot of the looted electronics (phones, tablets etc.) have geolocation / “find my device” enabled. One victim tracked his phone to an area of Moscow and his tablet to a military hospital in Moscow. If it’s still in Ukraine, especially in the Donbas region, makes a nice little artillery target.

Russians don’t recruit their soldiers based on IQ, unless maybe it’s an upper, rather than lower bound.

it’s brilliant of course, but what sells the joke is that russian speakers by and large couldn’t tell you what an english pronoun is.

i’ve been wishfully hoping it would be possible to impose some no fly zone rules in adjacent areas, and eventually squeezing russian no fly zone as russian airforce attrits, and nato builds up their rotations.

yeah this is an interesting dimension to the conflict. russians are apparently relatively advanced in jamming, perhaps more so than the us. but their own gps is not as good. with fewer satellites and ground stations etc. worse bandwidth for controlling the sats as well i believe.

This is from a segment on the PBS NewsHour today. See if you can identify the historical military figure whose portrait is on the wall here.

Kofman is like the go-to guy for Russian military. He’s on the podcast I linked above.

can’t imagine it’s difficult to ‘jam’ a public system that’s just a bunch of satellites broadcasting precise times. Would just need to broadcast a few cloned signals with wrong times and you’re good.

That’s Jean-Luc Picard to you, Sir.
