Trump tax returns leaked. For realz.

No change. And nobody at Forbes has any credibility when it comes to listing trump as a billionaire. They are full of shit.

lol trump supporters don’t have that complex libertarian point of view.

How is it “mocking” him to say that he paid fuck-all tax though? He won! This “mocking” assumes that there’s something bad about dicking people over for your own benefit. What if we assume that nobody cares about that?

yeah it’s like when you cut in line and everyone congratulate you on a well executed plan.

the simplest view a person can have is ‘i got screwed’. and in general the idea of trying to reach every single trump supporter is idiotic. they are all assholes, but they do have different type of assholes.

There is no logical explanation, but I’m pretty confident in my read of stupid Americans. It makes him look weak, if done correctly (i.e. dismissive and sarcastic). Outrage plays into his hands.

Like, remember that paint shop guy who had to take Trump to court to get paid on an unpaid bill and then voted for him?

This guy got PERSONALLY screwed by Trump and then voted for him anyway. The message this $750 thing is pushing here is “Trump is bad because he’s screwing over the federal government and that ultimately hurts you in some abstract way”. People hate the federal government, they hate the system, they hate paying taxes. This “but Trump is cheating the common good, ultimately” thing is not going to resonate as a way of convincing people that Trump is cheating them personally, a message which, as we’ve seen, didn’t even work in the case of a guy who he literally did screw over personally.

I hear you, and I agree, but there is a way to frame it to make fun of him for being a broke fraud. It is subtle but if presented correctly (eye roll, smirk) it will be effective.

That’s why you have to spin it as him conning the average Joe. Trump paid $750 and he’s a billionaire, how much did you pay? He thinks you’re a sucker!

You have to make the voter feel slighted.

They clearly need to run focus groups on this because every angle of it seems like a good attack and some of our smartest minds seem to disagree on what they’d go with as Plan A.

Okay. I don’t know what will work and not trying to die on that hill. I doubt anyone here knows either, despite the confidence.

My feeling is that convincing them that Trump is doing a bad job running the country is harder imo, but I guess you guys have a plan.

I agree that presenting things this way is the correct way to go after Trump - i.e. not that he’s bad, but that he’s an ineffective bullshit artist. I don’t get how a story where again, HE WON, is a good basis for doing this.

See upthread to where the guy literally got personally scammed by Trump and didn’t care.

These guys like being dommed. That feeling of outrage you have where you see the powerful taking advantage of the powerless, they don’t have that. To them that’s a guy they want working on their side.

This isn’t going to change any of the true believers mind.

If he was a real winner he would have paid $0 instead of $750, that’s why I say $750 is irrationally better.

“These guys” are voting for Trump regardless. The question is what kind of campaign can get people to vote or change the mind of people who don’t care that much about politics.

Not the point, nothing would. Those people would rather die than give an inch, see Herman Cain.

The message isn’t that he’s a cheater. It isn’t that he directly screwed or lied to his supporters. That would be consistent with his story that he’s a businessman. A dishonest scumbag of a businessman, sure. But still essentially what he’s always represented himself as, and still successful. The message, The True Story of Trump, is that he paid $750 because he’s a loser. The end.

“Look, Biden paid $3 million in tax and Trump paid $750 because he’s a LOSER” is totally incoherent messaging. Trump is a winner there.

The liberal left need to get over this assumption that everyone agrees that it is bad to use power and wealth to screw over the less powerful and wealthy for your personal gain. This is not a universally agreed upon axiom. In fact, in many ways it’s the bedrock difference between the left and the right. Trump is already losing women even in red states. Men like Trump because they wish they were him and if they were, they would totally screw over the federal government too. In a heartbeat.

Ffs it’s not because he’s a loser, it’s because he is broke.

Honestly, while this debate is valid, it really doesn’t matter. It is basically impossible for Trump to gain votes talking about his taxes and/or business losses. I know I’m a broken record here, but the goal isn’t to flip anyone, it’s to prevent anyone from flipping.

Once in a while it might be nice to point out to Trump supporters that their hero is completely miserable. Maybe they can argue whether he’s a great businessman, or a great conman or a great statesman, but there’s really little doubt than he is a very unhappy person. Constantly aggrieved. Constantly complaining. He doesn’t laugh. Rarely smiles. Just a miserable guy.
