Anybody want to guess what time those tariffs on Mexico, China, Canada were confirmed?

This administration seems bad.

The army corps of engineers suddenly decided to release a bunch of water from some lakes in Northern California. This did not in fact put out any fires in Southern California, it justed flood some farm land

Chesterton’s Fence

In its most concise version, Chesterton’s Fence states the following:

“Do not remove a fence until you know why it was put up in the first place.”

The lesson of Chesterton’s Fence is what already exists likely serves purposes that are not immediately obvious.

Fences don’t appear by accident. They are built by people who planned them and had a reason to believe they would benefit someone. Before we take an ax to a fence, we must first understand the reason behind its existence.

eh, I guess that’s jargon. I’m sure the AP style guide uses “elected officials” but in the staffer/campaign world, “elected” as a noun is pretty standard.

Typed out of habit, tbh.

Nobody knew water management could be so complicated.

He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.

Yeah. They’re taking way more action this time around. There’s nobody to reign him in or distract him. If anything, the people around him (Musk and the Project 2025 assholes especially) are pushing for more action.

They’re not even pushing, they’re just doing it. My fear was that the ranks would be filled with true believers who are empowered to go buckwild and here we are. I don’t think Trump is any more engaged or interested in any of this than he ever was.

Agreed. I’m also a lot more pessimistic than most about the idea that Trump and Musk are going to have a falling out. I think Musk is very useful to Trump. So this might not be a short term “flooding the zone” problem but rather just how the administration is going to operate.

A team including current and former employees of Musk assumed command of OPM on Jan. 20, the day Trump took office. They have moved sofa beds onto the fifth floor of the agency’s headquarters, which contains the director’s office and can only be accessed with a security badge or a security escort, one of the OPM employees said.
