I posted a link to a 2 month free trial upthread if you want to try it. The only cost to me is my retinal scans, finger prints, and face scan lol. I’m sure nothing to be concerned about.
anyone got a rec for a family friendly place to stay around San Diego? Hotel/AirBnB
My wife and I went a couple years ago and stayed in Ocean Beach. There was a ton of good food options nearby and right by the ocean. There was also a slice of beach called “Dog Beach” that just had friendly dogs running all over the place with their owners. Price was reasonable at the time I would give you the recommendation but it would be too small for the family. Plenty of Airbnbs nearby though.
We stayed with two teens on a schooner docked in the harbor. It was a little pricey I guess, but not outrageously so. We could have had the owners take us for a cruise for an extra fee, but declined.
it’s absoutely worth it if you can get it for free (some high-end credit cards and frequent flier elite programs will absorb the cost).
otherwise, how much are you willing to pay to trade 5 minutes of staring at your phone while standing in line before security for 5 minutes of staring at your phone while sitting at the gate after security?
Lol at 5 minutes. You’re running as hot as the sun it that’s your typical time savings compared to going through security check with the masses.

I think he meant compared to TSA precheck, not to the regular public.
I travel dozens of times a year and don’t have Clear. It’s usually a marginal time savings over TSA precheck, at best.
What I’ve found is that anytime TSA precheck is busy enough to have a big line, Clear has a line too. I’ve seen the precheck Clear line much longer than TSA precheck during peak times.
I am Atlanta-based, where there are so many corporate travelers based here that any elite program is swamped. YMMV.
My opinion is it’s marginal for a frequent traveler, useless for an ocasional traveler.
How often do you have to rent a car for it to be worth bring loyal to a brand?
I’ve never bothered but I probably maxed out at 7-10 rentals in a year. I feel like I see promos where a lot of them basically give away some level of status. Also, all the brands you are probably renting from are now owned by like 2 companies.
I got status through my credit card. Also, National just letting you take any car in the aisle when you rent at least a midsize is awesome, and so I almost always use them when available.

My guess is once a month. Maybe less if how nice the car is happens to be important to you. Generally I don’t care about this at all.
There has been only one time in my life (about 15 yrs ago) when the car I rented was too shitty. I rented from something that popped up on priceline but wasn’t a major chain (I think it was Payless). I signed up for their cheapest economy car and they gave me something without power brakes or power steering, which I had never experienced prior to that. It also drove pretty rough. I went back and complained about it and they gave me a really old Ford Escort that had nearly 100K miles on it and had some torn upholstery, but drove fine.
Now I just go with major national chains. I draw the line at Advantage. Won’t rent from any company with fewer locations than that.
Just sign up for the express programs with whatever chain you have. I’ve seen so many long lines during covid thanks to understaffing, and Avis preferred (or equivalent) has saved me over and over again.
Do NOT drink the water.
It’s a shithole to be avoided.
Tijuana isn’t bad now. They have a really nice bar/restaurant district.
@Rusemandingo - you still around on this site for advice?
Gringos go outside the Zona Norte?
Tijuana got bad about 15 years ago, then it remade itself. It has brew pubs with hipster food. Unless it’s gotten bad again in the last few years.
Here’s me and 2p2er gramps hanging out at the now defunct Donkey Punch Brewing company.
After this we walked to eat somewhere in a different part of town. Felt like being out in LA or San Diego.
That giant table gimmick seems as uncomfortable AF.
What’s the point in going to Tijuana if it feels like LA/SD?
