Trans Issues In Sports/Society

I agree for the most part.

The only difference between a good faith question and and a bad faith question is the person asking it.

I think if the question is coming from someone whose position is transphobia is dumb and the GOP amendment is dumber, that’s different from it coming from the guy who doesn’t want trans women using women’s restrooms.

I don’t think youre coming from a transphobic place or anything I’m just trying to give my own experiences with these situations and how it could come across to a trans person reading it. Like I know you’re part of this forum and you’re not asking in bad faith I don’t think but like if someone on Reddit asks the same questions you’re asking I would just assume they are a trolling right winger baiting me and I’d place you on that side. I’m not saying you are I’m just saying that’s just how it is.

I have no reason to doubt you. I’m sure that’s how it is. Like social media, I avoid reddit as well. In the case of reddit, it’s just that I find the format completely unreadable, so I only go there rarely. >99% of my exposure to twitter, facebook, and reddit is what people post on this forum. So you can rest assured that this is the only place I’d ever have this discussion. It’s even extremely unlikely that I’d have it in real life.

If you are interested in sports, you should be having this discussion in real life. Its not enough to not be transphobic, you should be actively anti transphobic.

Thank you. I have several friends who are disabled-amputees and they suffered extreme mental anguish over the ableist criticism of Pistorius’ blades. It drove several of them into even more severe depression to see him lampooned in media and on various forums.

“But it’s not fair to the other competitors” never seemed to resonate with them.

The only people I really have substantive discussions with are about as progressive as I am. For reference, I know basically zero Trumpkins in real life. I suppose there might be a few casual acquaintances, but certainly not anyone with whomI have the kind of relationship where I might have a drink or dinner with them.

I need a check on myself here, because I don’t want to be an ableist dick.

But I don’t think the Oscar Pistorius situation is comparable.

I’m willing to have an open-minded good faith discussion about this.

State your position.

I guess I’m having a tough time thinking that it’s the same competition.

It’s a biomechanical modification that is made specifically to the sport.

(Maybe “specifically” isn’t exactly the right word, but I can’t imagine those blades would be allowed in, say, taekwondo).

Did you watch the 30 for 30 documentary on him? It’s very good.

No, haven’t seen very many 30 for 30s. I’ll put in on my list.

If we’re going to do Pistorius, we should do it in another thread. I don’t remember all the minute details like I once did. I do remember an epic post by EmpireMan on the subject, but I suspect it was the exact type of thing that Basic’s friends found distressing. So, I’m kind of feeling bad about liking it.

If is doing a LOT of heavy lifting in that sentence

Dafuq? Why not?

If you arent making the arguments you are literally typing out… you should probably stop making said arguments.

Its othering, plain and simple. The right needs constant versions of the others available to them at all times to use as a shield or people would have to actually examine their takes and ohhhhhh boy do the republicans not want anyone to look at their actual arguments for even a second.

Lindsay Ellis has some pretty good essays on the topic as well, including this recent one on the history of transphobia in entertainment.

I already said this in an earlier post:

Hard disagree. If the question can be asked in bad faith, it is much more likely than not to simply be a bad faith question, regardless of the questioner
