Land of Hope & Glory? - UK Politics and other stuff

Among the casualties from the Tories are Liz Truss and Jacob Rees Mogg. I think some here will appreciate that.

Jeremy Corbyn has won a seat as an independent after being kicked out of Labour.

From the BBC:

Here are some of Labour’s top priorities:

  • Provide economic stability with clear rules on tax and spending, including no increases to existing income tax rates, National Insurance or VAT
  • Cut NHS waiting times with 40,000 more appointments a week by paying staff more to work weekends and evenings
  • Create a Border Security Command with counter-terror style powers to stop trafficking gangs and people smuggling
  • Set up Great British Energy, a publicly owned clean energy firm, to create jobs, cut bills and invest in clean energy
  • Tackle antisocial behaviour with 13,000 more police and community support officers on the beat in England and Wales
  • Recruit 6,500 more teachers and introduce free breakfast clubs at every primary school in England

It’s a brighter day, but it sure ain’t beach weather.

Labour got fewer votes than they did in 2019 (when they got stuffed); turnout dropped 7 points with almost the whole drop in the Tory vote going to Farage’s right wing Reform.

In essence the scale of Labour’s victory is more a by-product of the giant schism taking place in right wing politics than the result of any particular enthusiasm for their own political platform. Their giant majority is a lot more tenuous than it seems.

Still, we got to see the defeat of some truly odious humans and though I’m not a big fan of Starmer he seems to be at least minimally competent.

As far as I can tell, what England needs most right now is massive infrastructure investment. The new guy seems like a mega centrist type so I would guess that some form of large scale borrowing to fund large scale public-private partnerships would be right up his alley. They really have to boost the economy to recover from the self inflicted wound of brexit.

Finally got around to watch this:

Doesnt look like Starmer will be the saviour if he wants to waiting for economic growth before he wants to spend more.

Kinda sickening that wherever you look its the same story. Cuts cuts cuts.

I’ll admit to being surprised that the UK has such a shoddy first past the post system.

The only good thing about the uk is our plug sockets. Everything else is dumb. Best plugs in the world though.

Also, you’re very polite!

I see your British socket, raise you this.

Common to see these in the Philippines.

No USB-C? Meh.

The USB is a bonus. It’s the accept all comers left hand side that’s revolutionary.

As someone who has appliances in Australian, Philippines, British and whatever that weird ass one with the round prongs is, these are priceless.

Standard fare from that hate rag. More importantly:

Not nec politics, but no fkn surprise that a religious leader turns out to be a massive pervert.
And protected by the ultimate leader of that church.

[shocked pickachu]

I hate these lying fuckers!

Boris Johnson on Radio 2 right now, blaming everyone and everything else except himself for his shitshow. Very Trumpian of him; what a surprise! I just turned it off.
