There’s also a danger if the attorney is really bumbling that it helps the defendant by making the Jury feel bad for him for having such a terrible attorney. I’ve had trials with attorneys so bad before that even as the prosecutor I would help them lay foundations for evidence, etc.
I honestly always saw that little bit of over the top theater as a sign that he was a fairly self aware sociopath who was very aware of what was going on… but then he didn’t sing like a canary. I genuinely thought Trump was fucked for a couple of days after Manafort got charged, and a couple of days after Stone did. “There’s no way these jackals take the fall for anyone” I thought.
