Wtf did I just watch? Episode 5 of Mythic Quest is weiiiiiird.

It reminds me a lot of LCD Soundsystem from Youre the Worst, but they built up to that with like 19 episodes, not 4.

2nd season of Dicktown is out and getting great critical reviews:

About a third of the way through the Americans (just finished season 2). Seems like a solid show so far.

I’ve got a question probably for the Russian speakers (@VoteForSocialists this is probably in your wheelhouse).

  1. How is the Russian of all the Rezidentura employees? Are they all clearly native speakers?

  2. What’s with them using two names every time they are addressing someone. Is that just because they are being formal? Or is that just standard and people aren’t just addressed by their first name alone (e.g. just “Nina” or “Oleg” instead of “Nina Sergeyevna” or “Oleg Igorevich”).

This is a thing Russians do and it makes War And Peace extremely confusing. Everyone’s got a formal name and then a patronymic, it’s a mess.

Condemned is a guilty pleasure of mine

the russian employees were actually russian, except for the old lady whobwas on Justified. some could have been better actors but overall it was pretty good.

Thanks. What about the second one?

If some Russian dude is just hanging out with his bros at a bar, can he just go with “Oleg” or is it still “Oleg Igorevich”?

Do they literally do it all the time, though? Is first name alone just never done even in casual settings.

I know very little about how this works, but I think everyone basically gets a name that’s used in informal situations that’s nothing like their first name.

nowadays it’s always Oleg. maybe in the 60s 70s it could have been Oleg with patronymic. We were supposed to use name with patronymic for teachers, just like you would address Mrs. Smith or something

they usually use the diminutive form. so Sasha for Aleksandr. whole other name isn’t common

Lots of Russian novels just assume you know that Sasha = Alexander or whatever, very confusing sometimes.

Yeah, that one threw me for a long time before I pieced it together.

On the other hand, an American novel would probably assume you knew that Dick=Richard. That makes just as much sense or less.

ALERT: dlk9s jr has started watching Breaking Bad
