The Television Streaming Thread: Part II - Hot Takes, Jags Fans, and Bert

The last couple of seasons of Dexter are the absolute, never to be surpassed, nut low of tv. They might be the nut low of all art throughout history.

I think this is a bit strong, but itā€™s definitely the absolute nut low of a show that was once quite good and somehow the finale managed to ratchet up the shittiness to a transcendent level without even a hint of ā€œso bad itā€™s goodā€.

Canā€™t disagree with any of those.

Lost maybe a little just in that I thought it aged incredibly well upon rewatch, but YMMV.

I wish you were wrong about House of Cards, but I felt like it was really a perfect two-season show and never quite reached that same height, though it fell to some deep lows.

Dexter was a masterpiece through season 3, moments of glory in season 4, and then never recovered beyond a few great casting choices and interesting ideas.

Having said that, the most recent season was GREAT. I would suggest anyone on first or repeat viewing now just go Dexter s1-4, then skip to Dexter New Blood.

New Blood does a pretty good job of refreshing you about everything important you just skipped.

Plus watch the finale so you can not ever be tempted to watch the other seasons.

this is the most intriguing sentence Iā€™ve ever read.

Late seasons of The Office must be added to any shouldaā€™ tapped out sooner list. Just thinking about some of those post-Michael-Scott characters makes me cringe.

Itā€™s not nearly as good as the Michael Scott years, but The Office was still good without him. Floor was always pretty high, though the ceiling wasnā€™t as high.

My wife and I watched it with our son - first time for him, rewatch for us. I agree, it aged well and the ending was actually much better than I remembered. Kind of feels like a show where people think the ending is supposed to be bad because thatā€™s how the pop culture narrative has gone, but itā€™s pretty solid.

Guess weā€™re opposite bros!

  1. Stopped after three episodes of season 5
  2. Stopped somewhere in season 3
  3. Stopped after episode 2-3 of season 5
  4. Havenā€™t watched
  5. Stopped right before the season finale of the penultimate season

Too much good content and way too little time to spend it watching crap.

On another note I just started watching Legion, like the concept two episodes in and the reviews are surprisingly good, 91/86 on RT eg.

No mentions ITT. anyone seen it?

Itā€™s been a while, but my memory is that it quickly devolved into a total shit show.

Yah, Iā€™m in this category. Thought it was terrible pretty much right when Michael left.

Just finished White Lotus season one.

Pretty good show. I was expecting more of a comedy but good performances. I thought the central theme was the inevitability of transactional relationships - or at least the feeling of them - between people of unequal financial means. And I thought it did a nice job of articulating that.

My gf quite liked it too Should I watch S2? Is it a new cast of characters? If itā€™s sort of more of the same then I donā€™t know if I want to bother.

S2 isnā€™t quite as good imo but I still enjoyed it despite the lame subplot involving the hotel manager. It initially sets up a mystery thatā€™s quite intriguing and fun to try to solve as the series progresses.

The main them this time is sex among the very rich - too much sex, not enough sex, sex as power, sex as deception.

Yes watch S2, new location and characters with one exception (well 2 i guess)

Really enjoying Slow Horses S2 through E2.

S1 GOAT with Aubrey Plaza in a very unique role but the other seasons are so strange šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

S2 is better. Jal is wrong per usual.

J/k. He does have the theme wrong tho. There is a lot of sex but itā€™s largely incidental to the larger theme

Iā€™m now hating S2 of Slow Horses because thereā€™s only one episode left and I want so much more of it.

Yes, you should watch it. Itā€™s comparable in quality to S1 and itā€™s different enough to be interesting.
