The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

A US version would be directed by Michael Bay with 0% of the social commentary and 9000% more explosions.

The US version would star Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura.

It also subs in hopscotch for squid game.

Imagine all the kids watching “Hopscotch” by accident only to see the red rover game in the first episode! :grinning:

Anyone read that Sepinwall list of the best sitcoms of all-time a few months back? Parks and Rec was #9, lmao

3 eps into Squid Game. It’s a parody right?

Just started Alice in Borderlands, and I think it suffers from being dubbed. Subtitles > bad dubbing (although apparently the subtitles in Squid Game are pretty terrible and miss a lot of the subtlety of the conversations).

I thought the sub problem in squid game was only when English subs were applied over the dubbing. I had heard that the english subs over the korean were pretty good.

Having finished this now, I can tell how the US version will end with enough confidence that I will put it in spoiler blur It gets down to the end with the final game, they vote to end the game without killing each other and have a big hug, rich guys very upset. The host is so touched by the display he gives them the money anyway and the film closes with them enjoying Champaign on the flight to Las Vegas.

Yeah, this is what I had read.

" Youngmi’s analysis drew some backlash as others pointed out that the translation she was critiquing was Netflix’s English closed caption option (which translates the English dub), not the official English subtitles, which were more accurate. But does it make much difference? If the English dub botches the translation, visually impaired fans miss out on the nuances of the script. Or what about the 36 million deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers in America, whose Netflix accounts might be set to play the English CC version by default?"

A big reason why I prefer Alice over Squid is that the premise is just fundamentally impossible. They’ll probably ruin it by telling us he was in a dream or it was a VR world, but a part of me hopes they never explain who’s really behind the games, kinda like The Prisoner.

I’m not sure I understand the distinction - or how I choose between the two options.

I usually watch in the Native language with english subs. Ragnorak worked pretty good that way.

Its in the subtitles option at the bottom. Closed Captioning I believe is done by someone capturing and writing the captions in real time, and subtitling is done by someone in advance and then programmed into the movie. (Captioning is inserted as well… im not explaining this well.)

I’m only two episodes into Squid Game, so I have no comment on the rest of the season, but saw a TikTok where a woman explained the problem with the English subtitles. Basically, they don’t express the nuance of all the dialogue. The translation is too simple, too literal at times, whereas what the person actually said was much deeper or interesting, to the point where we’re missing out on some character development or true emotion.

Someone commented that aside from possible not being able to get the best translators or give them enough time to do it right, one issue is likely that you can’t put too many words on the screen or people won’t be able to read them fast enough and watch the show at the same time.

I’m certainly enjoying the show, though, and I doubt it’s really hampering my viewing experience.

My wife disagrees but my sentiment of each squid game episodes aligns fairly closely with each season of game of thrones. On a whim, I did a quick residual analysis of imdb ratings, which came out fairly close as well, directionally at least.

That’s bc IMDb is not all that accurate for GOT. Season 7 was already trash, but people were slow to penalize the series for it, whereas the penultimate ep in SG was still pretty awesome. Also the finale of SG was a slight letdown but not remotely close to the drop in quality of GOT. So I agree with your wife that the comparison doesn’t hold.

Agree on the last episode not being anywhere as bad as last season of GOT, or even bad at all, but for me there was a high point and subsequently fell off, which wasn’t at all the case for my wife. I should have started with “hot take incoming” and clarify it’s a very personal take despite the loose directional alignment with imdb ratings. Comparisons to the sharp decline of GOT is hyperbole. Also learning that much of the social commentary was lost in translation softens the blow I experienced when I thought the message of the show turned a corner - it may not have been entirely intended.

a lot of this take comes on a personal level. Episode 6, while fantastic, killed off the characters and stories I most connected to. This is another connection that reminds me of early GoT. I was disappointed that they built up the sanctity and fairness of the competition aspect with the doc storyline, but then rig the games when someone is too clever later. I later accepted that fairness was largely frontman’s self-delusion that he adheres to some code, even though he breaks it repeatedly, like with the lights or the incidental maming of Sae-Byeok. The marble drop was telgraphed the whole episode but hit me like a ton of bricks. I felt nothing close to that for the rest of the season. My wife says this take is just me still in the second stage of grief. The american guys voice acting was also immersion-breaking lol terribad. Also I felt nothing for Sang-Woo’s sacrifice and was annoyed Seong Gi-Hun took a whole year to go see Sae-Byeok’s bro. In a way, you have to have done something right to build up the investment I had in these characters and themes to evoke the reaction I’m having to which much credit is due.

Yeah, that’s one hot take. I can accept the argument that the final two episodes were worse and a let-down, but it is no where in the ballpark with GOT. GOT’s last few seasons were so bad not just because the writing sucked but because they ruined so much of what had taken place in the earlier great seasons. Character arcs were completely ignored while other characters went from intelligent to bumbling idiots, such that on a re-watch lots of great scenes no longer make sense knowing the ending - the best example I can think of is the Jamie/Brienne bath discussion.

Nothing in the final episodes of Squid Game comes close. At worst the last episodes are a let down, but the series still tells a coherent story, which I don’t think you can say about GOT. Yeah I can see being disappointed in Gi-Hun’s actions after winning, but it is at least logical to what we know about his character and doesn’t ruin his earlier character development.

Started and finished Midnight Mass, I thought it was good. Can’t say much more cause I think it was better going into it having no idea what it was supposed to be about. I mean it’s a mystery show, part of the fun is figuring it out before the reveals.

i just finished it a couple nights ago and liked it alot.
