Her name was Ruttebaker. Or maybe it was Rubbengardner.
No that was the main character, gardenhoser.
I mean, how old is Henry supposed to be? They seem pretty young. Like, 14 seems too old but maybe Iām wrong.
Bones, I was trying to extend the joke about his name to her. Looks like this fastball lost its mojo.
I have watched almost every True Crime documentary on HBO. Two line reviews of some:
I Love You, Now Die - the story about the girl who encouraged a boy to kill himself over text. Very balanced and watchable.
Who Killed Garett Phillips - boy is killed under mysterious circumstances, only black guy in town (motherās ex-boyfriend) is accused of the murder. Not my favorite of the bunch, Iām still not really sure what happened.
The Cheshire Murders - a couple psychos massacre a family, local police bungle the response. Pretty salacious story, but thereās no real āthereā there.
Beware the Slenderman - the two girls who stab their friend to please Slenderman. This was good, there were interviews with the girls that I had never seen, I recommend especially if you already kinda know the story.
Capturing the Friedmans - messed up family with pedo dad, famous documentary. Sad and disturbing.
Mommy Dead and Dearest - very hard to sum up in one line, lot going on here. Very good, I recommend.
Thereās Something Wrong with Aunt Diane - woman drives wrong way on the Taconic Parkway, killing many people including herself and a bunch of children. This was really sad, the womanās family doesnāt want to accept this was her fault, but it doesnāt really get anywhere.
Iāll Be Gone in the Dark - Patton Oswaltās wife tracks the Golden State Killer. Very mixed feelings on this one, the GSK/ONS stuff is interesting, the stuff about Michele and Patton is murky imo.
Iāve met Dr. Pettite a couple times and others involved in this. No real interest in watching it other than to see how they portray Cheshire PD, as they really did fuck it up.
They probably mention it in the Doc but the State abolished the death penalty but tried to only make it apply to cases after the change in law strictly due to this case. Obv it was ruled the law canāt work that way.
Finally caught the final two episodes of The Americans, pretty anticlimactic ending iyam but Iāve seen worse.
I stopped watching the Americans before the final season. It just felt too cartoonish.
A few notes on some TV shows I have finished up.
I toughed it out all the way to the series finale of Blindspot. The concept was interesting, the execution less so. The bright spot of the series is Patterson, played by Ashley Johnson. Gamers may know her as the voice of Ellie in The Last of Us. I do not recommend this show to anyone.
A much better series final season was Marvelās Agentās of SHIELD. They were put in a tough spot where it was pretty much impossible to maintain continuity with the movies, so I donāt hold it against them. I am happy that the show had a lengthy epilogue that was given time to breathe and I feel they did a good job of ending every characterās story arc.
Another show with a long epilogue in the final episode was Stargirl. Tonally different from the other teenage superhero show, Titans, it wasnāt especially deep but well-executed. The characters you are supposed to like are generally likable. It was light-hearted fun for people who donāt need grimdark comic book-based TV shows, although I am concerned that itās move to the CW might lead to an injection of excessive melodrama and angst.
Doom Patrol ended on a cliffhanger as COVID prevented the show from shooting a full second season. While Stargirl heads to the CW, season three of Doom Patrol will be on HBO Max. The most compelling character is clearly Crazy Jane and her multiple identities. Diane Guerreroās ability to portray those identities as fully their own characters is reminiscent of Tatiana Maslanyās turn in Orphan Black.
I also caught the second episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks. It was fun, even if the ending was a bit obvious. CBS All Access put episode one on YouTube for free:
30 minutes into Scott Pilgrim and I think this might be the worst movie Iāve ever seen. Outright offensive to the art of film. Iām happy Ebert died having never seen this.
Wat?
It feels like a movie for incels. A bunch of overdone special effects with a quirky male protagonist, whoās actually a piece of shit, winning over the cute girl he doesnāt even know.
Not worst movie Iāve ever seen, but didnāt like it, as much as it seemed like I should have. But god Ebert would have hated it. Ebert was always a video game hater.
The final season is excellent. The first episode of the season is one of the all time great episodes of the series.
First person Iāve heard dislike the finale. The scene in the parking garage is perfect, and the song choice for the train scene gets me every time.
Selling Sunset. How did I miss this?
Scott Pilgrim is a pretty good movie, but itās a weird comedy and as such opinions are going to differ radically. The Big Lebowski is a top-5 movie for me but my girlfriend said she turned it off halfway through because she couldnāt stand it. Shrug.
Also Ebert gave a 2-star review to Starship Troopers, so heās dead to me in addition to being actually dead.
Any rating from 0 to 4 stars is perfectly appropriate for Starship Troopers. What the hell is a critic supposed to do when the filmmaker successfully makes a bad movie intentionally as satire?
First one is great satire though imo. Iāve tried to watch the sequels now that they all star Casper Can Dien again but they are so bad lol. Maybe thatās how you feel about the first one.
Did any of you watch the documentary Confessions of a Superhero? I think thatās what it was called. It was about actors who work as street performers dressed up as famous comic book characters.
Ah here we go.
That guy in the Superman costume got a little discussion itt iirc when he passed away recently.
Anyway I bring it up only because when I last tracked the actors, the girl who would dress as Wonder Woman was dating Rico himself, aka Casper Can Dien.

I didnāt dislike it, like I said I have seen worse. I just didnāt love it. The With or Without You montage went on way too long I thought, they had to restart the song in the middle several timesā¦which kinda points to the montage itself going on too long. I prefer to see actors act when possible as opposed to montages being used to wrap series, I mean itās kind of lazy. There are notable exceptions and it sometimes does work well, like on Six Feet Under for example.

I kind of have a hard time buying Stan reacting the way he did in the garage. He has been pretty much a straight arrow most of the series, and heās been obsessed with the Jennings the whole last season. His suspicions are finally confirmed at long last and he justā¦lets them walk? Itās a really tough pill to swallow. Also I totally get Paige staying behind, she never seemed to fully buy in from my estimation, but that should have happened in her apartment. It made no sense on the train, without a word to her parents or a dime in her pocket. For a character whom weāve seen grow and mature so much, it was a very childish/immature/unthinking way to bug out of the situation. But I get that she needed to be in the garage scene. Meh.
Yeah ending to The Americans was perfect. great show.
So has nobody seen The Umbrella academy? Finished the second season and it was pretty good. There are a couple things I rolled my eyes at but overall good fun.
Yeah Stan letting them walk was a shorter, less egregious version of Dexterās sister. Characters like that, itās a tough spot, if they never find out about the Big Thing it feels like youāre cheating but then when they find out itās too hard to have them know and then do the ending you want, which doesnāt involve the main characters being rats (not in character for Felicity) or spending the rest of their lives in supermax federal prison (most sensible ending but donāt want to see that).
