It wasnât all that long ago that we were told Musk and Zuckerberg were some of the good ones.
Iâd like to hear more about the origins and usages of this phrase, inside and outside of government, especially among extreme right-wing libertarians (cf. âflourishing free market in children,â Rothbard, etc.), if you have time. I know neither you nor I believes in these ideas or ever did, and Iâm not implying otherwise; legitimately curious about origins and ideological valences of this horrible term and your knowledge thereof.
Itâs a direct quotation from this CDC study.

The author is Jo Jones of the National Center for Health Statistics, whose Ph.D. is in sociology-demography from UNC. My guess is that the original intent behind that particular phrase is harmless and is meant to be dispassionate and academic-sounding.
No, sorry, I canât do anything other than loudly not vote, because all my time is devoted to posting âI canât make a difference, I mean what do you even suggestâ to people with nothing but suggestions
Weâre probably never going to get to enjoy this, but the next liberal Supreme Court nominee will testify at their confirmation hearing that they will respect Dobbs as binding precedent
Iâd enjoy it more if they said âLol fuck your precedent, youâre not voting to confirm me anyway,â cause no liberal justice is ever getting a Republican vote anyway.
Although I guess they may need Manchinâs vote.
The only correct answer is âthe precedent is to not respect precedent. I respect that precedent.â
âI would have voted for Bidenâs super moderate nominee, but he refused to say Dobbs was settled law.â
Something Sabo posted on the other site. I would ask him to post it here, but heâs not allowed.
I mean, Iâm not going to get in the way of people doing direct action. That is an undeniable good. But I do think abandoning and ceding the conventional political battlefield is a huge mistake. Direct action performs the best when the opposition has at least some semblance of conscience, and ceding political power to an amoral fascist theocratic party with no shame about its aspirations for unchecked one party rule seems like a surefire way to get direct activists killed and/or thrown in camps.
The important takeaway is that throwing your hands up and proclaiming thereâs nothing you can do should be mocked. The takeaway of doing one thing rather than as many as you can do (and voting costs people with the kinds of jobs 80-90% of this board has costs nothing and should not be considered taking up space making for less things youâre capable of doing) is not the correct takeaway.
âNot votingâ is not doing something unless you have companion pieces to your action. If anyone wants to ânot vote so as to be a dissenting voiceâ thatâs completely laughable if youâre not doing something to amplify that voice. Those things involve organizing and thereâs literally endless examples of how to do that successfully, plenty of which involve no risk to your life, freedom, or comfort.
So, what should dems do other than win elections?
Next week the senate will vote on a law enshrining Roe. It will die by filibuster. 2-5 dems support the filibuster. Thatâs like 10% of the dem senate members.
What hardball politics should dems be doing? Maybe donât stump for your Tex dem rep buddy? Thatâll move the ball.
Short of violence I donât see a more effective strategy than is already being pursued. The real strategy should have probably been to shut down the Senate after RBG died until Biden was sworn in. That likely would have meant a government shutdown (and it still may have been possible to confirm Barrett).
Your trolleyâs breaks are on, itâs not the worst answer.
I could see The Golden Child 2 perhaps starring Eddie Murphy in reaction to Top Gun Maverick where Eddie comes out of retirement and tries to save the Apathy golden child in the wake of the death of the Irony child.
In the post you were responding to AQ wasnât talking about what Democrats should do, but what people should do. The easiest thing would just be to donate to Planned Parenthood. They not only have their own operation, they do funnel a lot of money to other people helping with access. (my software job is mostly about access to reproductive care and abortion services). A radical thing someone might do is actually help a specific person from a state where abortions are illegal.
Or you could protest, blockade, boycott, work to organize boycotts/strikes. AQ probably has more options. Youâre a law dude, so maybe provide legal assistance to people who are being prosecuted for either taking part in abortion services or protesting.
Could also nuke teh filibuster and pass a nationwide abortion protection act since itâs wildly popular since the repubes are gonan do the opposite of that when Desantis wins in 24
Alito and Kav need to wait for their fellow citizens to break in and rub literal crap on the walls before they complain. And if they follow precedent, not then either.
