Read about the history of tactics of the abortion movement, and other movements like suffrage, civil rights, and gay rights. If there’s not many descriptions of things outside electoralism in that book, find another book. The point is that focusing solely on electoralism, at least in our particular version of a two-party system, will always leave you disappointed.
There are endless ways to make a real difference immediately in people’s lives, that at the very least make for decent arguments about changing social norms and priorities which eventually change priorities of the electorate and of politicians. Certainly a better argument than that time was the only factor in progress.
Don’t like to read? Find groups near you and try them out. Search for things that include phrases like mutual aid with, in this case, abortion. Try to find groups that do not spend any time and money on electoralism. Barring that, try to find groups that don’t make it their number one priority.
There is no abortion fund and abortion outreach group near you? Help start one. There are people on this board with a lot of resources and a lot of things about them that make people listen to them.
Giving up is gross when you have plenty of privilege to spend and aren’t even the direct target. Do things that make you uncomfortable and embarrassed.
I mean they once ruled, quite literally, that cops have no duty to enforce restraining orders. At all. No matter how violent the person was who was being restrained. That was like decades ago. Basically, they said cops have no duty to protect the people who hired and paid them to protect them (taxpayers). ETA: And this was a way more reasonable court. lol just go hog wild
Someone put together a montage of Susan Collins saying Roe wasn’t in danger when she was voting for these judges; I made it 10 seconds and will not post it because it really causes rage
They’re not going to stop with overturning Roe. They’re going to criminalize abortion in every state, with no exceptions. Probably much faster than anyone thinks. And they’re going to lie about their goal every step of the way.
People need to learn to take the L and stop the “they’re in on it” bullshit. The Dems fought back in exactly the way they should: appointing a pro-choice justice. We’re going to need a couple more justices, so it’s time to elect more Democrats.
Yeah good luck with gerrymandered-to-hell districts, voter suppression, and if that doesn’t work - outright theft of elections. Our democracy is in deep shit.
And half the country thinks the left is out of control because of pronouns. WAAF
How do you see that actually stopping what is coming?
Nah, like 15-20 states will probably pass laws between now and November. It’s going to be in the news almost constantly.
She was lying the whole time, she even had a shit eating grin during some of it. She got what she wanted/needed: Kavanaugh on the court and her own re-election. She’s a winner, Dems are losers.
There will be major protests, some now, some in November, lots for the next Womens’ March which is too late to matter.
Correct.
Correct.
Correct.
Correct, but he’s also going to get impeached in like 8.5 months, so…
If the Dems were smart and actually trying to win, they’d attempt to organize to have people move from FL → GA, SC → NC, etc.
Dems aren’t fully on board with reversing Roe or banning abortion. They’re fully on board with protecting norms and thus protecting this SCOTUS because norms and in particular this SCOTUS protects corporations and the wealthy. That’s more important to them than going scorched earth to get victories on the issues their voters care about, and that’s the difference between the two sides now. One is going scorched earth for their base and the other is using a very elite strategy of doing jack-shit, writing strongly worded letters, and having their pals write op-eds about how it’s all going to be okay because reasons.
Numerous people here are going to be personally dramatically affected by each thing that comes next. Like may have to choose between leaving America or risking being jailed level affected.
I am 35 and expect us to finally prevail in my late 60s. I expect things to get worse for 10-15 years, plateau for 10-15 years, then (hopefully) snap back pretty hard after that at some point. But there is no sure thing, we could lose forever pretty quickly here.
