He had jumped up and out of the ring though. That’s called a “dead body” in sumo and they’re never going to give him the call there.
Awaiting you when you get off at Ryogoku Station in Tokyo–home of sumo’s Kokugikan arena.
Rikishi at play.
Hakuoho is now Hakunofuji.
Merry Christmas, fellow sumo fans!
Good chance Hoshoryu doesn’t make it far into the Hatsu Basho as he’s got a pretty bad MCL injury.
Can’t wait to see how Aonishiki fares as a new Ozeki. Probably doesn’t miss a beat.
Let the 2026 Sumo Games begin!
This is what’s great about sumo.

Probably not a popular take, but why do they make the giant fat dudes fall down a huge ledge? Just to add some extra chance of injury?
This is a point of contention, the experts all swear it doesn’t add to the injury risk. I am not convinced.
The experts claim that dumping the 400 pound dudes off a cliff doesn’t add to injury risk? Good thing those woke NFL experts aren’t involved to ruin the fun.
Honestly I think the real answer is there’s so many centuries of tradition behind it that is hard to change. Building the ring is itself a whole quasi-religious ceremony.
Someone’s having a good basho, and it’s not the Yokozuna/Ozeki. Gotta think Onosato goes kyujo because he’s clearly not right.
Four days to go. Who u got?
I love that there will be some 90-pound 95-year-old man sitting front row ready to get absolutely flattened if anything goes wrong
Those seats are called sunakaburi (covered with sand) and come with the disclaimer that the Sumo Kyokai is NOT responsible for death or injury by flying rikishi.
Never mind, it’s going to be Aonishiki again.
I keep thinking one of these days I’m going to see an old dude punch out by being flattened by a falling rikishi, but it hasn’t happened yet. Those old Japanese guys are more sturdy than you’d think.
is it too early to start talking about … it?
