Yeah, I conceived of it as real wars. Full Metal Jacket was a close miss for me.
Re: Paths of Glory, I think it’s one of the most bulletproof counterexamples to the claim that there are no war movies that are truly anti-war. The majority of it isn’t spent on the battlefield, but a notable chunk of it is.
I think so too. FMJ and Paths of Glory are both Kubrick, so you can expect similar worldviews even though the movies are very different from each other. I don’t really buy the line that there aren’t anti-war films, but it is a popular sentiment and I do get where it comes from; I just think it’s overly absolute. From my list, Apocalypse Now also seems clearly anti-war to me.
Can’t say I’ve seen that one. War movies are a lower genre for me and I tend to be slower to get to them, but there are still enough of them that pop for me that I can appreciate the best of the best.
