The Seven Movie List Game

7 best police investigation movies:

Se7en
Zodiac
Memories of Murder
Killers of the Flower Moon
High and Low
Silence of the Lambs
Gone Girl

7 best non-police investigation movies:

Rear Window
Double Indemnity
The Insider
Spotlight
Chinatown
Michael Clayton
Psycho (feels like a bit of a category-bender because the private detective feels like a cop the whole time, but I think it has to fall in here)

Mine are very similar (I’m leaving Star Wars out because I know that people debate whether that’s true sci-fi, leaving The Thing out because I see it as more horror than sci-fi):

2001: A Space Odyssey
Alien
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Mad Max: Fury Road
Nope
Ex Machina
Aliens

Mad max isnt sci fi imo.

I know it’s one of those things that gets debated. I buy the argument that dystopia is innately sci-fi. I grant that you don’t actually have to change the laws of physics to allow the events of Mad Max to happen on a long enough timeline, so I understand the counter.

These genre categories always get funky. By all means it feels like Jurassic Park clearly checks the boxes of science fiction, but it just feels more like an adventure movie than a sci-fi. I originally typed it and then deleted it on the basis that it just didn’t quite feel like it fit.

If I were to lift it then The Terminator gets in.

That’s not Santa as a character. That’s a guy in a Santa suit

Not for me. Really good movie, but investigation-based movies are a rich resource and there’s just a ton of competition. It’s why I set out to make one list and then ended up splitting it into two sub-lists.

I think this would disqualify Bad Santa though too, right?

Yeah. Guess I gotta punt to the list maker for the strictness on that one.

I assume this also must be about historical wars that have actually happened? That’s a pretty spicy category to pick. I think I’d at least have Full Metal Jacket over Dunkirk, and I guess I need to see Paths of Glory.
