The Queen's Gambit

What do you mean by "abusive character development’?

Episode 1 and 2, basically just putting her through these terrible situations as a way to build viewer sympathy. Same ideas as both The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo and and Harry Potter.

Guys, no need for spoilers itt, or any dedicated show or movie thread.

Not sure if you meant me, I blurred my last post though I don’t really think it includes spoilers.

No, I meant the opposite. You don’t need to use spoiler tags at all ITT.

MJ>>>>>>>QB

QB=Quambit

I’m gonna agree with Keeed here, even though I used them myself.

If you are watching it or are going to watch it and you open this thread, what the fuck do you expect?

I’m not sure how you could read it in a meaningful way. If everyone used spoilers perfectly, then there wouldn’t be much to read. Even with perfect spoiler use, I find it’s very difficult to read such a thread before I’m done without accidentally getting too much information. Also you can never assume perfect spoiler use, so you have to be extra careful over what you read, making the reading of the thread less useful.

The disadvantage to using spoilers is minor. It’s a small annoyance. That’s why I still do it. But I can’t get worked up over someone who does not.

Yeah personally I don’t open show threads unless I’m caught up

I feel like this is a poor set up for that.

The sheriff has arrived.

Mega threads use spoiler tags.

Dedicated threads like this are so people who have seen it can freely discuss it.

I am a generous ruler, however, so will permit you to start a separate thread for discussion that requires spoiler tags. I believe 22 had separate threads like that for Game of Thrones.

The big thing with Game of Thrones was that it needed separate threads for book readers and non readers. Yeah for dedicated threads it should be assumed you are caught up. Maybe like a week notice if they drop the whole season like Cobra Kai.

I want dedicated threads specifically for people who don’t want to use spoiler tags.

To me, the Megathread is where you can continue to discuss a specific movie or show by using spoiler tags. The conversation is almost certainly to be far more limited and contained so to me seems most appropriate for occasional posts in the megathreads.

The purposes of discussion with vs without spoilers are at such odds that I’m not sure being diligent about them in dedicated threads will allow for a peaceful coexistence.

For a show that gets released all at once you can’t really follow the thread even if people use spoilers. You’re gonna be jumping all over trying to find the people that have happened to have watched the number of episodes you currently have while making a post after that select number of episodes.

Finally watched this. I’m genuinely surprised the Magical Negro trope hasn’t gotten more mentions ITT. She literally shows up out of nowhere and saves the life of the main character.

It feels almost like the writers finished the script and realized how much of a trope Jolene’s character was so they went back and had her assert that she’s a paralegal who has sex. Chessmate!

(I say this having no knowledge of how developed Jolene’s character is in the novel.)

See post 11 in this thread.

Yeah, I saw that. I didn’t really see the trope at that point because it was too early on in the characters arc to really fit imo.

That the character was there at the beginning is somewhat of a mitigation in that she isn’t a completely random person. At the same time it is such a blatant case of “black person who doesn’t exist in the outside world shows up and saves white hero” that I’m kind of amazed that it made it into the series in such a crude manner, let alone that it isn’t a major source of criticism.
