Y’all all seem to forget that basically up to the point he was elected, something like 15 R senators, still seated today, were publicly against Trump. Then there are many more who were neutral. Those people shifted seamlessly to supporting him. Frankly, It’s crazier to think those people won’t cut bait given a good opportunity. Few, if any, of these people actually like Trump. Marco Rubio is another one who would vote to convict under a number of plausible scenarios. I don’t agree with much of what nunn posts, but he’s not that far out there on this.
You have to remember the vast majority of the cult are not too bright and digest FoxNews at an alarming rate. They’ve been brainwashed into thinking Russia is a friend and not a geopolitical threat, they think Putin is like some Dickensesque benefactor to their godking and don’t see anything wrong with an ex KGB spook with ties to organized crime meddling in our elections as long as it helps their guy.
How does the fascist playbook work?
Is it conscious? Does someone tell Trump that giving soldiers and cops immunity gives them the freedom to do all the dirty work or does Trump just think soldiers and cops should be able to kill people and this accidentally enables his fascism? I find it hard to believe it’s an intentional strategy of Trump at least, others could be in his ear, but the impact is the same.
I’ll be in Boston mid-December, New York during the holidays and DC the first week of January. I’m game for a meetup around then.
Saw Hamilton last night. The line “quid pro quo” drew a HUGE laugh from the audience.
Only question is- has it been part of the script or a recent addition?
That and my county turning blue for first time since civil war and the lady handing out R sample ballot saying “don’t worry it won’t burn your fingers” has me convinced that electorate will boot him (unless shenanigans). All the union types that crossed over see him for the fraud he is as well. PA MI WI wlll go D.
What kind of odds will you give me on a bet that every single one of them votes to acquit?
If one of your scenarios is some kind of moral conversation whereby republicans finally see a line too far Trump has crossed you are delusional. There is no line.
I can’t see any scenario whereby voting to convict helps keep them in power. This is the ONLY standard they care about.
I don’t think there are any moral conversations going on, just political calculations. I don’t think R senators like having Trump at the helm, because he makes their jobs much harder. His corruption and criminality combined with his supreme incompetence make it harder for them to pretend like he doesn’t exist and avoid having their own power/influence swept away by his bullshit. That’s why I think there are at least some scenarios where Trump gets removed, if enough R Senators think their ability to hold on to their own power is easier with Trump out of the picture.
There is no scenario for this part though.
They basically see trump as political chemotherapy. Sure it makes them sick and feels like poison but it’s worth it for the “greater good” of stacking the judicial branch for decades to come.
Yeah, this is just where we disagree. But, I will point out that this argument isn’t coherent with the rest of your argument that Rs are power-hungry and only looking out for their own self interest. You’re now switching to an argument that relies on Rs having a moral conversation to support your position, I.e. that the Marco Rubio’s of the world care more about appointing conservative judges to the bench in District Courts in, like, Oregon rather than strengthening their hold on their own office.
Holding their own seat >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>judicial seats >everything else
Holding their own seat >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>judicial seats >everything else
I agree there.
“Pelosi & Schitt”
More extortion itt. Vote for me or you’ll lose everything. Bribery is in his blood.
Part of me admires his dedication to spewing bullshit. 24/7/365.
