This is kind of the point I’ve been trying to make in some recent posts but perhaps not articulating well. Fighting this election on the racism front is fighting it on Trump’s terms. Making the election a more conventional referendum on the incumbent (“are you better off than you were 4 years ago?”) is a better way to attack Trump. Trump refuses to take responsibility for the historically awful outcomes that occurred on his watch, but that doesn’t mean that Democrats can’t or shouldn’t hang them on Trump. When I say that they shouldn’t Orange Man Bad, what I mean is that they shouldn’t try to get people to vote against Trump’s racism or sexism. They should get them to vote against Trump’s incompetence.

Right. This requires discipline because what elites find most disgusting about Trump (obvious racism and race-baiting) is NOT what persuadable voters find disgusting / will respond to.
