It’s not a conservative thing. It’s for when your belief system is so weird that you can’t find it on TV or professional websites. You have to remember that for most people, quality content = stuff that agrees with me.

Oddly specific. I take it the southern Wisconsin toddlers are less ill-behaved?

140k is already a beast. Do you have a sense for how much is left?

50k-100k probably. We got every country in Central America and my big adventure getting out of Nicraragua.

Oh yeah, I still have to go back and do the Olmecs, the Aztecs, Teotihuacan and Emperor Maximillian. 10k words there probably. Fuck.

(my pony got stuck watching an ad that it couldn’t skip)

From IRL discussions that I’ve had with people on the right(everything from RWNJs<---->bog standard conservatives) I have discovered an essential part of the desire to share their views via youtube.

It’s important to understand that all people make decisions and come to conclusions based upon emotion, the logical justifications are tacked on post hoc.

They watched a youtube that made them feel smart because the person in the video confidently delivered non-rebutted points that confirmed their “gut” instincts. It is not the concepts or arguments contained within the videos, it is the feeling that they had while watching the video that they are trying to share with you.

The video didn’t steelman their opponents’ arguments or critically examine the positive claims that were being made. So, when they are confronted with disagreement, they feel disoriented because the video that made them feel good about their beliefs didn’t convince them of those beliefs; it only reinforced what they already felt.

It’s the only place they can find anything that supports their views because internet.

Also, youtube is where all geniuses go to ‘do their own research’ dontchaknow.

Basic conversation I have with ~everyone over 60:

Me: I don’t watch cable news. It’s all terrible.

Them: Well what do you watch?

Me: Nothing. I read.

Them: <blank stare>

There’s definitely something to smooth voice (often Brit-accent) combined with slick graphics that really seems to trigger them. That’s why they always want you to watch. Like you said, they can’t put into words the feeling they got from the video. Exact same thing with Jordan Peterson fans.

Every RWNJ on CP just assumes that every liberal watches MSNBC or listens to liberal talk radio at least 4 hours/day like they do on the right.

I think it is important to get the timing right here. He announced his retirement in February 2015, when the Trump candidacy was still seen as just some self promotion, just as all his other runs for president before. I think he made the right decision to announce it before the race got heated, for pretty much the reasons you pointed out above.

He’s still active for causes he cares about, like the 9/11 first responders and is a producer at Colbert’s show. Had he foreseen what would have happened, maybe he would have made a different choice, but hindsight is our current shithole of a year.

This is me too. I find video actually a really horrible way to ingest most information. There are specific things that can only be conveyed for the most part but I am not a fan of watching an hour video of something I could have read in 10 minutes. It is extremely inefficient for me most of the time.

When people tell you to watch an extremely long video but their lack any ability to summarize it, I am not watching it 100 out of 100 times.
