In addition to making it harder for people to vote, I worry that the Republicans push to ban mail in voting is because they plan to do some serious voter intimidation and suppression at the polls. Can’t have a line of Nazis scaring people away from their own mailboxes.

Seems inevitable.

I mean, politics IS performative, especially campaign politics. Also, having pride merch is smart. Well, in a normal campaign season. You WANT your supporters wearing your shit and spreading your message at Pride events. Obviously talking pre-COVID here.

Large city pride parades have hundreds of thousands of participants/attendees. Also, people who go want to wear stuff with the Pride flag on it. If you give them something to wear that has your name on it, that’s a shit ton of free exposure.

Obviously this is a cynical “everything is a grift” take on it. My less cynical take on it is this: When you’re a member of a sub group or minority, any indication that you are seen by a candidate can contribute to better opinions of that candidate. This is the same reason representation in media and culture is so important.

Also, Pride month just ended, so you probably saw an uptick in Pride merch for June, specifically.

uh yeah I’ll be voting for Biden and all that but all of my lols at actually buying “Biden merch” and like wearing it around in public. Other than who he’s running against there’s nothing inspiring about him.

I’m sympathetic to this, and I wouldn’t be surprised if gays have higher income and more interest in politics and merch. The campaign knows what sells. However, they could also add “Moms for Biden” or “Dads for Biden” or whatever. I’d just like to see a greater variety of campaign gear beyond standard A,B,C stuff and gay stuff. That said, Biden seems to be doing well with the “Hey, I’m Joe, you know me and I’m not crazy” strategy, so I can’t complain too much.

I know everyone here hates him, but one of the reasons Pete grew his campaign so quickly was that he actually had all this stuff…and if he didn’t, he released his entire design toolkit so that grassroots supporters could use the official logo and colors to make their own stuff. It was right on his website.

Rose twitter thinks that all the xx4Pete accounts were bots, but I assure, they weren’t. They all had logos because they made them themselves straight from the official toolkit.
