A sitting U.S. president who canât stop attacking black and brown people. A never-ending trade war that has necessitated more than one multibillion-dollar farm bailout. A humanitarian crisis on the border of his own state. These are just a handful of the many issues that Senator Ted Cruz could be focused on. Instead, heâs currently devoting his efforts to a much more important cause: demanding another tax cut for the rich, this time without Congressâs approval.
In a letter sent to Steve Mnuchin on Monday, the senator from Texas urged the Treasury Secretary to use his âauthorityâ to index capital gains to inflation, a move that would almost exclusively benefit the mega-rich. Claiming, falsely, that the United States economy âhas experienced historic levels of growth as a result of Congress and the current administrationâs policies such as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act,â Cruz insists that it is now crucial for the Treasury Department to adjust capital gains for inflation âso that everyday Americans can continue to enjoy better lives and livelihoods.â And by âeveryday Americans,â he of course means (but doesnât say) the spectacularly wealthy.
Missing from Cruzâs call for Mnuchin to use âexecutive authorityâ to end this âunfairâ treatment of taxpayers, which was signed by 20 of his Republican colleagues, is the fact that, according to the Penn Wharton Budget model, a whopping 86% of the benefit of indexing capital gains to inflation would go to the 1 percent (and reduce annual tax revenue by an estimated $102 billion over a decade). Perhaps seeking to address this criticism, Cruz claimed that changing how capital gains are taxed âwouldâŚunlock capital for investment, increase wages, create new jobs, and grow the economy, benefiting Americans across all income levels.â In other words, heâs arguing that the executive branch should give the super-rich another tax cut and itâll benefit everyone because of trickle-down economics whichâ checks notes âhas never actually worked. Including in the case of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Glad to see it is finally Infrastructure Week

Whats wrong with being off by almost 300%?
If youâre were planning on borrowing 160 why not go for 450?
More is always better, right?
Todayâs 64 penny question is if Dumb Donny can go one day without mentioning Mueller, anything related to the investigation, or impeachment? He made just a couple of small mentions yesterday. And nothing today so farâŚ

Here comes the VoterID push again. It wonât go anywhere but itâll get people JAQing âwhy not have voter id?â and theyâll try to turn it around on dems to say they arenât committed to securing our voting process.
Paper ballots are important though. I wonder if heâll walk that back.
âYou guys are so worried about RUSSIA! RUSSIA! RUSSIA! why donât we have voter ID to make sure Russia canât interfere?â
Yeah paper is important but theyâll tie them together so a vote against voterID is a vote against paper backups
