I’m not sure that the right response to this Baltimore mess is to engage Trump on the merits and point out that ACTUALLY St. Louis is an even shittier city and their congressional reps are republican. That is especially the case since Trump is right that basically every major city has higher crime numbers than the surrounding suburbs and rural areas, and almost all of them are run by democrats.
Using Baltimore as an example, 2 out of our last 3 mayors left office because they committed felonies related to using their office for grifting. Our State’s Attorney just convicted someone of murder on their FOURTH retrial, when there is abundant evidence that the police fabricated the entire case against the guy, including planting a gun on him, after shooting him a dozen times in a case of mistaken identity. Our police department, with democrat-appointed commissioners, had a gun trace task force that robbed citizens, sold drugs they confiscated, are on tape planting drugs on a suspect, and carried fake guns in their glove boxes to plant on people they shot.
Obviously a republican mayor or city council is going to be massively worse for black residents and their neighborhoods than even a corrupt democratic one, but people in a lot of these cities should be justifiably angry at their local government. The correct response (factually - I’m not sure about politically)is to point out that Trump is racist and if he actually cared he could provide resources to the city, but also make it clear that he’s right that Baltimore is in a pretty bad place and that it’s a good example of how it’s not enough to elect someone with a D next to their name.

And there is the minor little nugget that Rep. Cummings doesn’t actually “lead” the city but represents part of the state. There are many other people in line for responsiblity for the condition of the city, including The Orange. Eff these people tho and arguing in good faith. He’s a racist know-nothing should be the permanent refrain.

It’s dumber than you can possibly imagine.
Republicans are great at refocusing everybody on something completely irrelevant to distract from whatever horrible shit they did. The border camps were starting to get people worked up from a humanitarian perspective and then suddenly the debate was whether or not “concentration camp” was an accurate description.
The only way to win this is to ignore their whataboutism and just keep hammering them on being pieces of shit.
