The idea of the PRINCIPLED CONSERVATIVE is the big lie of American politics.
To anyone paying even a little bit of attention, its been obvious the GOP is wholly intellectually and morally bankrupt for my entire adult life (I’m 35). As much as the media so desperately wants to present scumbags as (DECENT MEN), see, e.g., John McCain, the reality is there aren’t any adults in the room.
Of course I know that, but even morally bankrupt sociopaths want to be remembered well in the history books. History is full of morally bankrupt evil sociopaths whose main goal is to be remembered like heros, or at least well in the history books.
They don’t need anyone when hacks like Chuck Todd reliably have panelists like this asswipe from National Review who can push the WH line with no pushback.
The guy who got caught on a hot mic saying that Putin pays Trump and Rorabacher is now the GOP House Minority Leader and will be Speaker if GOP retakes the House. They’ve long since stopped caring about personal legacies. They only look to the next election, never beyond.
I suspect it’s mostly about money. Even the ones who aren’t getting bribed in cash can get do nothing lobbying or consulting or Fox News deals for $500k+. And the GOP actively drafts idiots they can control, who have no actual skills / other options. Look at Mike Pence.
IMO many of Trump’s supporters are literally living in a different reality. For it to be possible for them to respond out of conscience they would need to perceive and understand these circumstances in a way similar to ours. I think that at the root of a lot of our differences lie big philosophical disagreements concerning human nature, society, government, justice, and the meaning of life in general.
