More than 7000 of the jobs are in rural areas.

Except you need to hit him where the GOP claims to have concerns. Everyone who follows the GOP at all knows they’re openly and completely corrupt. They claim to be the ‘gods’ of national security, and if they’re not willing to do anything about the national security threats that Trump is causing and escalating daily they are absolutely awful on national security and give zero shits about this country (shocker for the truth to be revealed, I know). This is a place they can pound them where it hurts. Any GOP member going on the record against articles of impeachment related to the particular national security threats is going to have a problem, and Dem ads should pound them over this if that is the outcome.
Secretly, they want him gone and know it’s the right thing to do for actually protecting the country. Publicly they don’t think it’s politically expedient. So Mitch should give them exactly what they want, a secret ballot. If it goes 55-45 against, then we’ll know Flake was very wrong.
Mitch could essentially do the whole secret ballot bluff as the trial is starting. He goes to Trump, tells him the votes are there to convict on a secret ballot, and tells him to step down if he wants to avoid conviction. With Mitch, just like everything else it could or would be a bluff. But it might work.
