I’m not disregarding it. I’m saying that to most people asking the president of another country to investigate what is probably a legitimate case of corruption that took place in their country is not going to be the huge smoking gun that everybody seems to think it is.

Like if Obama had called Merkel in 2015 and said “hey we’re hearing a lot of chatter that Trump has been laundering money using a German bank. I want to ask you to do us a favor and look into that” - I don’t think there would be a lot of people screaming about how outrageous that was. It’s illegal, there is an obvious concern that type of thing influencing other actions of the administrations, but it’s not something that would have raised a bunch of red flags.

What if Obama’s personal attorney was the point man and it was 2010 mitt Romney.

There is no circumstance where Trump’s ask of Ukraine is appropriate or okay. If it would have been handled through normal channels it would be different. Black mail from the president of the United States and his personal attorney is not normal.

I would say that it is the “everybody does it” sort of corruption that it is easy for people on the other side to hand-wave away under the assumption that Clinton and/or Obama must have done the same, if not worse. They will think it is unfair for Trump to be singled out for behavior that they assume is commonplace. Since they think it is unfair, they see no problem with contorting facts in defense of Trump. Personally, I don’t see a big deal with contorting facts to take Trump down.

Watching Trump speak off the cuff reminds me a lot of the Big Lebowski dream sequences. Those dream sequences are just a mishmash of things that happened to Lebowski over the previous few days and don’t really make sense. Trump just spouts words and ideas he’s heard other people say around him the few days before he speaks without knowing what any of the words actually mean. You can tell when he’s between words he’s trying to think of some multisyllabic word he overheard somebody say the day before.

This is absolutely not true. It would be an insanely huge scandal for Obama to ask Merkel to investigate a political opponent. Obama doesn’t run criminal investigations. If the FBI asked the German police for records about an ongoing FBI criminal investigation, that’s normal, although it would rightly be perceived as very sensitive and handled carefully to avoid any suggestion that political appointees had any influence.

Honestly, I worry more that Democrats are kind of worn out and too lolnothingmatters cynical to handle this right. What has been made public so far is already a bigger scandal than Watergate, and we know almost nothing. Republicans are the only ones who can decide whether Trump gets removed or whether they use their power to shield him, but I don’t see how this doesn’t lead to a crushing 2020 victory either way. The Trumpiest 35% of the 2016 electorate may stay loyal and even continue to turn out, but 35% of the vote isn’t enough to win many elections.
